LIQUID-LEVEL INDICATOR.

Be it known that I, ALFREDO MARoNE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Santa Vittoria dAlba, Province of Cuneo, Italy. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Level Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for indicating the level of the cooling water in radiators of internal combustion engines for motor cars or the. like.
This device consists of a receptacle which is preferably integral with the stopper or cap closing the filling orifice of the radiator and that has its walls partially made of a transparent material and is ended by an emptying tube. The said receptacle which is filled with liquid, becomes positioned ina'.

A few modes of construction of the object? of the invention have been; illustratedby' way of example only in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a first form hemispherical receptacle 1 made of glass, integral with a cap or stopper 2 closing the filling orifice 3 of the radiator 4.
The fixing of the receptacle 1 to the said stopper 2 may be effected in any way; in the form shown in the drawing a collar 1' of the receptacle is fixed inside a recess 2 of the stopper 2 by means of cement 5.
The receptacle is completed by an emptying tube 6 leading to the'said recess 2' of the stopper 2 and having a suitable length so as to be immersed into the water 7 contained in the radiator when the stopper 2 is screwed on to the orifice 3.
The lower end of the emptying tube is preferably obliquely cut at 6 in such a manner as to facilitate the flow of the liquid 8 which is to be contained by the receptacle.
According to the modification shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the receptacle containing the liquid 8 forms an integral part of the stopper 2, the said receptacle consisting of an annular body 2 projecting fromthe upper part of the stopper and closed on its two faces by means of glass plates 1;

Once the stopper 2 placed in position, the tube 6 becomes immersed into the water 7 contained in the radiator and which is supposed quired for a good to rise to the level required for good working of the engine. Under these conditions the liquid 8 contained in the receptacle 1 cannot leave the latter and its presence which can be ascertained easily by the driver of the vehicle from his seat serves to indicate that the water in the radiator in maintained at the required level.
On the contrary if the level falls below the outlet orifice 6 of the tube 6, then the liquid 8 falls freely and entirely from the receptacle 1. The absence of liquid inside 1, which can also be seen from the drivers seat, indicates that the level of thewater in the radiator has fallen below the value reworking of the motor.
Referring now to the mode of construction shown in Fig. 4 the working is as follows:
When the water in the radiator tends to fall below the level .r..'v the lower orifice of the tube 9 is left uncovered. Air penetrates then inside the receptacle 1", 2 and produces a rapid flow of the liquid 8 out of the receptacle, the said liquid being discharged through the tube 6. The absence of the liquid 8, is therefore, a proof of the lowering of the level of the liquid 7 in the radiator.
According to the form of construction shown in Fig. 4: the length of the tube 6 has no importance because what determines the' emptying of the vessel 1", 2" when the level of the liquid low a certain limit, is the predetermined length of the tube 9. With this form of construction the emptying of the receptacle 1", 2", is more rapidly effected owing to the fact that air penetrates freely inside the said in the radiator falls beiavmaa receptacle through the tube 9. Also the initial filling of the said receptacle with liquid 8 is much facilitated.
I wish it to be understood that the de- W tails for carrying the invention into effect may be modified in various respects without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A radiator cap tion and a glass ortion, both readily removable as a unit rom a radiator, two tubes connected to said cap both of which have their lower ends extending into the liquid in the radiator, the upper end of one of which tubes extends above and the other be low the liquid level in said glass portion,
' a partial vacuum being maintained in said having a threaded porglass portion under all conditions of normal liquid level indication.
2. A liquid level indicator comprising a transparent liquid receptacle arranged above the level of the liquid whose level is to be indicated and having a depending tube, and an air vent tube extending normally above the liquid in said container, both tubes being normally liquid sealed by the liquid whose level is to be indicated.
3. A radiator cap comprising an inverted closed water receptacle in which the liquid is visible and a depending discharge tube and an air vent tube whose upper end extends above the level of the water in said receptacle the lower end of which is bevelled and extends into the water in the radiator to a lesser depth than said discharge tube.
