Description

R. AZBlLL. Axle-Skein for Wagons.
Patented April 13,1875.
ATTORNEYS THE GRAPHIC COJ HOTO :-LITH.39&4I PARK PLAGE,N-Y-
ATE S PATENT FFIG.
ROSS I. AZBILL, OF EDWARDSPORT, INDIANA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,005, dated April 13, 1875; application filed February 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ross IRVIN AZBILL, of Edwardsport, in the county of Knox and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thimble- Skeins and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thimbleskein for wagon-axles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertaius to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved thimble-skein, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the body of my thimbleskein, provided with a circumferential flange, a, against which the inner end of the hub will come. On top of the skein at the inner end is formed an oil-chamber, B, closed by means of a plug, 0, lid, or other device. The oilchamber B has an outlet through the flange a, leading into a longitudinal groove, 1), on top of the skein, and from said longitudinal groove 1) other grooves 61 61 run transversely on the skein, as shown, whereby the oil is conducted to all parts necessary to be oiled.
This lubricating device allows of oiling the axle without removing the Wheel, and it may be applied on ordinary axle points or spindles, if desired.
I am aware that axle-skeins have been made with one or more longitudinal grooves communicating with an oil-reservoir at the inner end of the skein; but in such devices the oil will run at once to the end of such groove, as the skein is most always made tapering. By the addition of one or more sets of transverse grooves, d d, the oil is distributed at any suitable point or points on the skein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The skein A, having exterior oil-reservoir, B, exterior longitudinal groove 1), and exterior cross-groove d, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of January, 1875.
' ROSS IRVIN AZBILL.
