lb It 112700772, it vim/y con/(307 72 Be it known that I, JOHN 'Ilnonrson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chilton, in the county of Calumet and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Boxes for Vehicles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in axle-boxes for vehicles, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accol'npanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal view through my improved axle-box, shown as applied to an axle. Fig. 2 isa perspective view of a portion of an axle, showing the fixed collar and washers mounted thereon; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one-half of the box, showing the recess therein to receive the shaft and collar thereon.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an axle of the ordinary construction, and B is a collar which is fixed upon the bearing end of the axle in any suitable manner and has acircu n1- ferential aperture B leading through into the chambered portion of the bearing end of the axle. Said chambered portion of the axle extends from the end of the axle up to the aperture leading through said collar and is provided for the purpose of allowing a lubricant to pass to the circumference of said collar. A space intervenes between said collar and the shoulder A of the axle, and washers I) are inserted in said space and are of sufficient thickness to fill the recesses E, formed in the inner ends of the sections E of the box. Said boxsections have each a longitudinal groove F to receive the bearing portion of the axle and a groove (ar, formed transversely across said longitudinal groove, for the reception of the collar B, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the drawings. Dowel-pins c are carried by one of said box-sections and are adapted to engage apertures c in the other section, whereby the two box-sections may be held together.
The outer portion of each box-section is cut away to form a shoulder K and has at its extreme outer end threads Ii upon a reduced portion of the box-section, said threaded portions of the two box-sections when adjusted upon the axle forming a continuous thread for the reception of the outer section N of the box. The inner end of said section N is recessed away, as at N, thus being adapted to fit over the shoulder K and against the surface O of the box-sections. Said section N has its outer end closed, as at Q, and the outer circumference of the contracted end thereof has screw-threads J for the reception of a cap J. An aperture 1 leads through the threads and communicates with the chambered portion within and is provided for the purpose of allowing a lubricant to flow into the chambered portion of the axle and also through a channel Gr, formed longitudinally in the circumference of the bearing portion of the axle.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of an axle-box made in accordance with my invention the various parts may be easily adjusted and removed, access may be had to the bearing parts, whereby they may be efficiently lubricated at all times, and the various parts may be securely held together.
While I have shown a particular construc tion of apparatus illustrating my improved axle-box, it will be understood that I may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as neW, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination With an axle of a vehicle having ashouldered portion over which a boxing is adapted to turn, a collar of the diameter of said shouldered portion, fixed to the bearing portion of the axle and spaced apart therefrom, complemental axle-box sections, the inner ends of Which are adapted to have bearing upon said shoulder, a semicircular flange projecting from the inner recessed portion of'each of said sections and having recessed bearing portions, the outer ends of said sections having each a semicylindrical shoulder and a contracted threaded projection, dowel-pins carried at positions diametrically opposite upon the inner edges of one of said l axle-box sections and adapted to engage apertures in the edge of the other section, a onepiece axle-box section With its inner end shouldered and extending over said cylindrical shoulders on the outer ends of said axle-box sections and provided with threads fitting the threads upon said extension, the outer portion of said one-piece axle-box section having a threaded end, and a nut fitted over said threaded end, as set forth.
