Be it known thatlI`,'JoHi/\I ScoTT TAYLOR, a citizenI ofthe United States, yresidin at Logansport, in the county of Cass and tate of Indiana, have invented certaii'i'new and4 useful Improvements in Axle-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to carriage-axles and axle-boxes.
It has for its object to provide an improved construction of axle and box which will be simple in construction," cheap of manufacture, and dustproof.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, andparticularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the box or bearing, showing its application to an axle or spindle. Fig. 2 is an inner face 4view of the inner clamping plate or ring, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line x :c of Fig'. l1. v
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in carrying out my invention I provide the spindle 1 with a transverse groove or slot 2 about midway of its length, very much as in my Patent No. 799,204, dated September 12, 1905. The inner end of said spindle is rovided with a shoulder-ring or collar 3, as 1n my said patent; but said spindle is straight instead of tapered at its outer end. The shoulder-bearing 4 is constructed the same as in my said patent, except that the inner edge of the restricted end portion 5,
which fits within the shoulder-ring or collarv 3, is cut away, as at 4a, and packed 4with packing 4b, held in place by a fiber ring 4". The intermediate nut-surface 6 and threaded restricted portion 7 of said shoulder-bearing 4 are formed as shown, the latter being adapted to' be engaged by the boxing 8, which 1s screw-threaded for that purpose. The shoulder-bearing is held in place by the broad sleeve 9, fitting over the central portion of the spindle and having a transverse perforation 10 therein registering with" theigrfb'vlffso thatthe tapered pin 11 (shown'infFig. may engag bth aild'loclr themwsther: At each en v ofsaid'sleeve is inserted a ring 12 t@ take up the endthrust. l' 1' At its inner end the boxing 8 has an outwardly-extending shoulder 18, against which abuts the inner clamping ring or plate 14. Said plate is keyed, as at l5, to the boxing, and its inner face is serrated or corrugated at 16 to engage the spokes 17. Near its outer edge said clamping-plate is also provided with perforations 18 for the passage of bolts 19, comprising additional means for securing the spokes. Another clamping. ring or plate 2O is mounted over the outer end of the boxing and, like the inner one, is provided with serrations 21 on its inner face and bolt-holes 22 near the edges and adapted to register with those in said inner ring. The'outer end of said ring or plate 20 is of less interior diameter than the other portionthereof and is adapted to fit over and abut against a shoulder 8a on said boxing. Said outer clampingring is secured in place, where it will clamp the Y spokes by the nut 23, screwed on the end of the boxing.
It will be noted that the packing between the shoulder-bearing and the spindle prevents the oil from escaping. The exterior diameter of the sleeve 9 is somewhat less than the interior diameter of the boxing to provide a chamber for oil. The serrations on the faces of the clamping-rings grasp the spokes firmly and aid in securing said spokes in place.
i Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a spindle having a shoulder-ring at its inner end, of a boxing, a shoulder-bearing fitting around said spindle and having a portion for engagement with the boxing and a portion fitting Within said shoulder-ring, means to retain the shoulderbearing in place, the inner edge of the portion of said shoulder-bearing which extends Within the shoulder-ring being cut away, and packing arranged within said shoulder-ring around the spindle in the recess-formed by cutting away said edge.

2. The combination, with a spindle having a shoulder-ring at its inner end, of a boxing,
a shoulder-bearing itting around said spindle and having a portion for engagement with the boxing and a portion fitting within said shoulder-ring, means to retain the shoulderbearing in place, the inner edge of the portion of said shoulder-bearing which extends within the shoulder-ring being eut away, packing arranged within said shoulder-ring around the spindle in the recess formed by cutting away said edge and a iber ring for retaining said paeking in place.
3. The combination, with a spindle having l a shoulder-ring at its inner end, of a shoul der-bearing iitting around said spindle and having a portion for engagement with the boxing and a portion fitting Within said shoulder-ring, a sleeve arranged midway between the ends of said spindle to `which it is secured" whereby the shoulder-bearing is retained in place, a boxing having a portion adapted to it around the end of said spindle and an offset portion, extending over and beyond the sleeve, provided with means for engagement with the shoulder-bearing, and packing arranged around the spindle between the ends of said sleeve and the boxing and shoulder-bearing,
