No. 204,638. Patented June 4,1878.
jyz,
UNITED STATES PATENT FEICE.
JAMES WATT AND STEWART WATT, OF BARNESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGN- ORS TO THEMSELVES AND J. W. WATT, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEM ENT IN CAR-WH EELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,638, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 16, H78. u
lnew and useful Improvements in Coal-Car Wheels; and we do hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a sectional perspective view of our wheel, and Fig. 2 a detail section ot' the screw-plug closing the oil-cup.
The nature of our invention consists in having a continuous slot or recess around the inner portion ofthe hub, and providing or cast- -ing alternate projections on either side of said slot, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter fully explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, We will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the wheel, and B the hub of the same, which hub is cast with the oilchamber e, and a central continuous recess or slot, d, extending from the inner portion of the hub to the oil-chamber. g g are projections cast alternately on either side of this slot, each of which should extend at least half- Way across the slot, thus leaving no space on the spindle which shall not be equally warm, as would be the case if a continuous slot without these projections or bridges was used. Another advantage ot' this manner of constructing a coal-car wheel is that of preventing the axle from gumming, as there will be a-free ilow of oil to the spindle.
h represents a hollow screw-plug, which is cast in with the hub, and provided with the screw-nut t'. The object of this plug is to enable the oil to be introduced without taking oft' the wheel.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A continuous slot around the central inner portion of the hub, provided with alternate projections, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our Own We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES H. WATT. STEWART WATT.
