Description
W. H. BREVOORT.
Vehicle-Axle Lubricator.
Patented April 29, I879.
Aim/Ways N. PETERS, PHOTD-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
WILLIAM H. BREVOORT, OF VINOENNES, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-AXLE LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,876, dated April 29, 1879; application filed February 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BREVOORT, of Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Lubricators; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lubricator for wagons, cars, and machinery, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an axleskein embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
A represents an ordinary cast-iron thimbleskein as used for wagons. On the inner end of this skein is cast a cup or box, B, for containing a suitable quantity of oil, and on the inside of this cup or box are formed female threads, as shown at a. In these threads is screwed a plug or follower, 0, having suitable provision for turning the same. When this plug or follower is turned down the oil in the cup is forced through a tube or passage, 12, formed in the skein, said tube extending from the cup to a cavity, d, in top of the skein, and from this cavity the oil emerges to the surface of the skein.
To prevent the tube and cavity from becoming gummed, the cavity is made of a pyramidal shape, and completely filled with a piece of rubber, D, or other elastic substance.
The pressure exerted by screwing down the plug 0 compresses the filling D and allows the oil to escape.
Instead of a screw plug or follower, a smooth one may be used, to be operated by a lever or other device for forcing out the oil, as required.
This invention may be used in the hub of a vehicle, journal-bearin g, or other device where it is desired to lubricate an axle or spindle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The filling D, of rubber or other elastic material, arranged to close the oil-tube, in combination with a plug or follower, arranged to force the oil from the oil-cup through said tube, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. H. BREVOORT.
