IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,657, dated April 6, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BOYD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a flexible connection of the pen to the holder or handle, made by connecting the tube of the pen-holder to the stalk or handle by a rubber band at the upper end, and a spring or springs below, so that the point of oscillation is at the upper end of the tube, where it gives better results than when the pen is connected to the lower end of the tube by a spring, so that the axis of motion is at the lower end.
My invention is designed to afford greater elasticity in steel and other comparatively rigid and stiff pens than they have when attached to a rigid holder-a feature which is very useful to entry-clerks and others having to write rapidly.
The drawing is a sectional elevation of a pen-holder constructed according to my invention.
A is the handle or stalk, and B the metallic tubular holder, which may be of any approved construction. The part 0 of the stalk which enters the tube B is made smaller than the tube to vibrate therein, and a rubber band, 1), or other flexible materialis used at the upper end of the tube to connect it to the stalk, while the lower part is connected by a spring or springs, E, projecting from the end of the stalk and binding in the tube, thus making the connection so that the point of vibration is at the upper end of the pen-holdin g tube.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with the handle A, a penholder, B, an elastic band, B, and a spring, E, the arrangement being substantially as shown and described.
