UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-

BARBER CHAIR.
Application filed April 4, 1925. Serial No. 20,652.
This invention relates to improvements in bar-bers chairs and has for an object to provide a chair which may ordinarily be used for the service of adult customers, at the same time possessing features which adapt it for use in the service of small children.
A further object is to provide a chair for the use of adults which by a slight manipulation of associated parts may have produced therefrom a chair upon which a child may sit at a height convenient for service in barbering.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following disclosure.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of a barbers chair with this invention incorporated therewith;
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the function of the form in Fig, 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the childs seat, folded;
Figures 4 and 5 show cooperative means between the chair parts; and
Figure 6 is a section detail showing a catch.
Referring to the drawings A represents a barbers chair having a back B, seat C, and arms D, as is customary in barbers chairs. A frame 10 is pivotally secured as at 11 to the back frame Z) and carries a twopart cushion S having faces on both sides. The face 8 forms a seat when the frame 10 is lowered as shown in Fig. 1 while the face 8 forms the back of the seat or a part of the back of the seat when the frame is raised and the chair is being used for the service of adults. When the frame is lowered a child may sit on the surface s and lean against the follower cushion B on the back B. When the frame is raised an adult may siton the seat G .and rest his back against the surface s, which is a continuation of surface of cushion B, as shown in Figure 3.
Vhen the frame is raised it may be secured in that position by any suitable means, such as the spring actuated detent 12, and when the frame is lowered, it may rest as shown upon the arms D for support when being sat upon by a child.
lVhen raised, the frame with its two-part cushion S may seat within a recess R in the back B so that its face 8 lies flush with the cushion B of the back. The follower cushion B is adapted to collapse within the recess B when the childs seat is folded up, and held by the detent. WVhen the childs seat is lowered the member B is advanced by the coil springs 14.
in case the frame when lowered is not broad enough to span the distance between the arms D, means has been provided to cooperate with the arms D. Various means may be employed but the form shown is preferred.
In Fig. 4 the frame carries a pair of rods 20 connected to-the inner ends of fingers 21 pivoted in the frame 10. The other end of the rod 20 has a turned-in end 22 which enters an arcuate slot 23 in the side members b, so that as the frame 10 is pivoted about its pivotal connection 11 the rods 20 will be moved back and forth longitudinally thereof to extend or retract the fingers 21 from or into contact with the arms D.
lVhile in the foregoing we have described specific embodiments and have mentioned only certain possible modifications, it will be appreciated that in practice we do not limit ourselves to such specific details as herein set forth, but may resort to any practical modifications falling within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. As an article of manufacture a back for barbers chairs comprising a main frame with divided cushions one of which is retractile to form a recess, a supplemental main frame to form a back for the folding seaL A chair back comprising a frame, a sub-frame mounted in the first frame and U adapted to be retracted therewithin and to be extended therefrom; divided cushions for the frame, adapted to retract Within the frame in advance of the sub-frame so that the sub-frame may seat, and adapted to extend to form a back for the sub-frame seat 10 when the same is extended.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
ANTONIO J. GASALE. ANTONIO DALESSANDRO.
