..App1ication filed Angust 25, I924. Serial No; 734,039,
The object of my said invention is the prof vision of advantageous means whereby a wmdow shade and curtain may be adqustea and adjustably fixed so'as to afford a clear passage for overhead ventilation while ob viating the draft and maintaining the privacy of an apartment. l 7 To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention conslsts 1n the lmprovement as hereinafter described'and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spec1ficat1on,:-,-
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved means in use.
Figure 2 is a broken plan view of thesam-e.
Figure 3 is a broken edge elevation of the which one of the slide members of the improvement is formed.
Figure 6 is a perspective of one of the lower bracket-s.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective of one of.
the latches comprised in the improvement. Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The window casing 1 is preferably arranged to contain sliding sashes 2 and is otherwise of the ordinary well known construction.
In accordance with my invention Iprovide on the faces of the side stiles of the casing 1 upper fixed brackets '3 and lower fixed brackets 4. These brackets serve to receive and hold upright bars 5 of angular cross-section, the said bars 5 being not hed at 6. The offsets 7 of thelower brackets a are provided with circular apertures 8 for the reception of upright rock shafts 9 which are journaled in the offsets 7 and are provided at their lower ends with handles 10. At 11 the rock shafts 9 are toothed as shown in of my improvement are preferably, t-houglr not necessarily, formed respectively of a blank such as designated by 12 in Figure 5, each of the said rectangular form and being provided in their upper and'lower walls with annular apertures 13 for the passage of the bars 5 and being also provided with outer overhanging portions 14 which serve for the connection slide members being of c as to afford adequate overhead ventilation of the upper ends of the shafts 9 and terminatein pendent resilientportions'15 which tend tospring inwardlyor toward each other. Guided' in the outer walls of the slidable me mbers12 arelatche's'16, beveled at 17 to engage the notches'6 of the bars 5 and havthe shafts' flf The outer endsv of the said latches 16are-reduced at119 and disposed in apertures in the arms 15" which arms ten'd'to press the latches'16 inwardly and yieldingly hold the said latches 16 against casual outward movement.
interposed between and appropriately con-. nected to the slidable members 12 is arod jingracks 18in mesh with the teeth. 11 of j 20, Figure 2, designed and adapted to pre-' vent tu'rning of the saidmembers 12 "horizontally about their axes, and also des1gned to assist in the vertical movements of the members 12 as a unit.
The slidable members 12 are provided with the usual aperture and notch, respectively, forthe reception of the end bearings of a shade roller 21. and it will also be noted that the slidable members 12 are provided with hooks 22, designed for the engagement and support of a curtain pol-e 23 shown by dotted lines 111' Figure 2.
The upper ends. of the shafts 9 are journaled in and connected to the overhanging portions ll of the slidable members 12, andfrom this it follows that through the medium of the shafts 9 the slidable members 12 and the shade and curtain supported thereon may be expeditiously and easily lowered. The slidable members 12 are adjustably fixed to the bars 5 by the latches 16 and from this it follows that precedent to raising or lowering theslidable members 12 and the shade and curtain, the said shafts 9 must be turned about their axes so as to withdraw the latches 16 from engagement withnotches of the bars 13. Then when the slidable members 12 are positioned as desired, the shafts 9 are released whereupon the resilient terminals 15 of the members 12 will press the said slidable members 16 into notches of the bars 5.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that-through the medium of my improvement a shade and curtain may be lowered so fecting the privacy of the apartment.
I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however to be understood as confining myself to the speoific construction and relative arrangement of parts in the present disclosure inasmuch as my invention is defined by my appended claim within the scope of which changes may be made without ailecting my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:
A device of the character described including spaced fixed brackets, an upright bar betwe n said brackets a slide membermounted for adjustmenton the bar and including a pendent resilient port-ion spaced from the bod 1 or the slide member said uo-ri ht bar having spaced notches, a latch member havins: reduced end portions, one of which is slidable through one Wall of the slide member and beveled for engagement with the iotches in said tip-right bar, the other r-edueed end of said latch being mounted in the resilient pendent portion whereby to norma-lly retain thebeveled portion in operative posit-ion a rack formed on said latchvrneinher, and a rock shaft supported parallel with the upright bar and havin'gvteeth for engagement with the rack whereby to actuate said rack to release the slide member and said rock shaft being longitudinally movable as; and forthe purpose set forth.
In, testimony whereof I affix my signature.
