This invention relates to window-shade guards or guides.
More particularly the invention relates to a guard or guide for shade roller curtains applicable to either doors or windows.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple device of this description which will thoroughly protect the rolled up portion of the shade from dirt and dust while at the same time the portion drawn down across the window will be kept from flapping.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be readily fitted to any size of window within the limits for which the device is built without requiring any special skill on the part of the person putting the device on the window frame.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a cap or shade member covering the shade roller and provided with means for receiving the shade roller ends, the same being of improved construction.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character having special means whereby the shade will be prevented from being drawn up so that its lower edge contacts with the roller or so that the roller, in its winding up operation over-runs.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combina tions of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the Figure 1 is an interior elevation showing the window provided with the improved device.

In the drawings illustrating this invention there has been shown a window having the side frame member S and the top frame member T. For this top frame member there is provided a shade roller housing which consists of two similar members slidably united so that they may fit any width of window. Each of these members is made of av single piece of sheet metal bent to provide a vertical front portion 10 and a horizontal top portion 11 from the rear end of which extends a flange 12 which is bent back as at 13. Similarly the face is provided with a horizontal bottom member 14: terminating at its rear edge in a downwardly extending rear flange 15 bent back upon its edge as shown in Figure 2. The two members forming the housing or cap are so arranged that the flange of one fits within the upper flange of the other while the lower flange of the second mentioned fits within the lower flange of the first mentioned. With this construction these members are slidable longitudinally with respect to each is a similar view from the inteother so that they can be made to fit in any desired width of window. It is to be particularly noted that the-heightof this housing or cap member may be InadesuIlicient to hold just one shade roller or may be made sufficient to hold two shade rollers as shown 'in Figure 2. Under any circumstances the construction will be just the same as the single roller type as for the double roller type. The double roller type. however, possesses the advantage of enabling shades of different Colors to be housed permanently in this art of the device and one or the other pu led down according to the desires of the occupant of the house. In the outer ends of the telescoping portions there is provided a flange portion 16 and below the lower part 14 at each corner the metal is turned downward as at 17 to provide an opening wherein ma be slid the upper end of a side member. ach of these side members consists of a front portion 18, an outer side portion 19, and a flange 20. The inner edge of the portion 18 is doubled upon itself as on 21 as is also the outer edge of the flange 20. Each side member, like the cap or housing member, consists of two parts having their flanges interlocked for slidable movement so that they. can be extended to suit any height of window. When used with an ordinary window the bottom of each of these side portions or le S is provided with a bottom piece 22. en used on a door this bottom piece is provided with a flange 23. In each case the various members are providedwith openings at 24 for the reception of securing screws and also one section of each member is provided with a longitudinal slot 25 so that after the members are adjusted a screw may be inserted through one of the openings 24 which comes in proper position and through the slot 25 into the woodwork of the window frame thus locking the parts into adjusted position. At the top of each upper leg section the metal is bent back upon itself at an angle as at 26 and then outward as at 27 and upward at 28 to lie against the inside of the front 18.
Thus a species of ratchet tooth isformed within each of the legs and the proportions of this tooth are such that a shade can slide freely between the tooth and window frame but the ordinary stiffening rod at the bottom of the shade cannot slide past-the stop. Thus the bottom edge of the shade is prevented from rising into the housing and is always accessible to the inmates of the house.
In use the shade rollers are placed within the housing with their end pintles projecting through the holes 29 in the housing ends which are formed in the ends of the housing for the purpose of receiving these pintles. The housing isthen secured to the top member T of the window frame. -The leg members or guides are then clipped into their places in the ends of the housing and are similarly secured to the side members S of the window frame.
It will be observed from Figures 9 and 11 that each of the parts of the device is formed of a blank of sheet metal and in these figures it will be noted that the various fold lines are indicated on the blanks by dash and dot lines. The fi ures also show the respective parts num ered with the reference characters as applied to the same parts in the elevational views.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a cheapl constructed, sensible and serviceable set 0 window or door shade guards or guides which can be made as artistic and ornamental as may be desired, the guides bein provided with a cap or housing for the s ade rollers. It is also to be noted that the cap or housing can be made in two sizes to accommodate either one or two shades. It will be seen that these guards and caps make it impossible to pull shades of! the rollers; to fray the edges of the shades by irregular rolling; to run the shades up crooked; to let them slide up and wind around the rollers and they prevent the flapping of shades in the wind and the admission of light or sight under the bottom or around the sides of the shades by holding them closely to the windows.
In addition to the above it is further to be noted that the double arrangement of shade roller in the larger housing makes it possible to have two shades of different colors and to use either or both at pleasure. Also one of these shades may be left rolled up and but one used as in changing the color of shades from winter to slimmer use.
From all of the foregoing it will be apparent that these guards and caps will greatly increase the life and usefulness of shades by the prevention of damage and besides will give a finished beautiful and artistic effect to the doors and windows.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material rinciples thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device 'of the kind described, a shade roller housing arranged to receive and support a shade roller and provided with a bottom portion formed to permit movement of a window-shade therethrough, guide legs depending from the ends of said housing and arranged to cover the side edges of a window-shade carried on a roller within the housing, and means within said guide legs to restrict upward movement of the lower edge of the window-shade.
2. In a device of the kind described ill-- eluding a shade roller housing composed of two similar telescopic sections each formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to provide a box-like portion having side and top flanges for securing the device to the top member of a window frame, the lower part 7 of the box-like portion terminating at its rear edge short of the window frame whereby to provide space thnough which may move a shade curtain, said housing being l'n'ovided on the under side at each end with a leg receiving socket, guide legs each fitting a respective socket and each consisting of two similar members each formed from a single strip of sheet metal and telescopically united, the upper section of each leg having a downwardly and reatwvardly extending portion in the top to constitute a stop member to prevent the lower edge of the said curtain passing upward into the housing.

As a new article of manufacture c-urtain shade guard formed from a single strip of sheet metaLsaid strip comprising a rectangular body portion, a side portion defined from the body portion by a fold line and a flange port1on defined from the side portion by a fold line, said strip further having a second side portion of less width than the first side portion and defined from the body portion by afold line, the second side portion being on the opposite side of the body to the first side portion. said strip further having a second flange portion defined from the second side portion by a fold line. the guard being formed by bending the side portions at right angles to the body portion and in the same direction and bending the flange portions at right angles to the side portions in a direction away from the body portion.
