H. S.v FINNEY.
. I Street-Sign. No. 160,891; j Patented March16,1875.
I TRS o @i Mu la THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOTD.LITH.39 Bc 41 PARK PLACE,N.Y.
ANIT-E13 S'IAns PATENT CFFIGE.
HIRAM S. FINNEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT l'N STREET-SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,891, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM `SEYMOUR FIN- NEY, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain newl Vit pertains to make and Iuse the same, reference being had to thev accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for indieating the names of streets and avenues upon the street lamp-posts of cities; and the improvement claimed herein consists of a signholder for lamps, having a ring provided with two or more horizontal integral arms, with dovetailed seats and separate angle holders, secured to the arms by the seat-shoulders and screw-bolts, and having faces, upon which the names of the streets are indicated, as also the numbers ot' the corner houses.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view, in perspective, of my improved sign-holder applied to a lamp-post; Fig. 2, a top view with one of the sign-holders removed; Fig. 3, a sectional view through one of the ring-seat arms and angled holders, and Fig. 4 the dovetailed armed ring.
The ring A is made to t over and upon the post B just below the lamp. It has two or more horizontal arms, C, cast with it, and provided with dovetailed seats a, formed by the shoulders a', which receive the angle-arms 1) of the holders D, which carry the si gnfaces E b, upon which the names and numbers of streets and the numbers of the corner houses are indicated. The holders D are securely fastened in the seats a of the arms O by the shoulders a and bolts f, so that one sign may be made at any time to give place to another without disturbing the other, and any tendency to break or snap, which would be the case were the arms and holders cast in one, is avoided. The seat-shoulders a brace the sign laterally, while the screw-bolts clamp them firmly in place. The ring A may be seated upon the post-band; but where no such seat exists the ring may be held in place by metallic wedges driven in between the lamp-post and the ring.
The sign-holder is strong and durable, and has many advantages, among which is the construction of arms and holders in two pieces, and their connection by dovetailseat joint and bolt, rendering the support of the sign secure, besides having the capacity of readily chan g ing` signs when required. The supplemental signs b, indicating the numbers of the corner houses, may also be mentioned as a desirable and convenient feature of my lamp-post streetf sign.
I claim- The si gn-holder for lamp-posts, consisting of the ring A, with two or more horizontal integral arms, O, having dovetail seats a a', and the separate angle holders D D', secured to the arms by the dovetail seats and screw-bolts f, as set forth.
