Description
(No Model.) G. W. CLAYTON.
FENCE POST. i
No. 574,191. v Patented 1360,29, 1896.`
WIT/VESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE VASHINGTON CLAYTON, OF LEBANON, IOWA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,191, dated December 29, 1896.
Application lecl .Tune 1, 1896. Serial No. 593,939. (No model.)
To MZ whom. t 77u01/ concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON CLAYTON, of Lebanon, county of Van Buren, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and accurate as will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is the production of a fence-post made up of a base-piece for insertion in the ground and a top piece for supporting other elements of a fence, the base being so constructed that it will retain its position when set and the top piece so joined to the base that it can be easily replaced.
With this obj ect in view my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and formation and combination of parts hereinafter described, and specified in the claims.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the cornplete post, the base thereof set in the ground, which latter is broken away for the purpose of showing the position of related parts. Fig. 2 illustrates the several elements of the post detached one from another and the construction of certain specific minor features.
I make the base-piece ci of cast-iron or other suitable material and of the form shown. It maybe cast hollow, if desired, though I have shown it solid. Upon the outer surface and'arranged alternatelyin rows are located cup-shaped projections c, each forming a small cavity or receptacle, as shown. When the post is set and the earth tamped, it fills these small cavities and securelyholds the base in position. I also make the base tapering or pointed at b; but this feature may in some cases be omitted, especially when the casting is to be made hollow. The top of the base, which supports the removable top piece of the post, is formed with an angular seat d, a Iiange e, having perforations lo, lugs g, and a seat j", adapted to receive a removable plate h, having perforations through which the lugs g pass when the plate is in position.
The top piece m is cut away at Zto fit the seat d and provided with a perforation n and grooves o to receive bolts j, the latter being shown in Fig. l.
As thus constructed it will be seen that the top can easily be removed from the base, and that by reason of the angular form of the seat cl'water will not be retained and cause the top piece, when made of wood', to decay. The cup-shaped projections on the surface of the base will securely hold the same in position and prevent it from being drawn out of the ground by the tension of the wire which is in practice attached to the top piece.
That I claim as new,.and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein-described fence-post made upv Y of a base-piece and a top piece; the basepiece provided with cup-like projections c and the top piece detachably secured to the base by bolts, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described fence-post consisting of the top and base; the base .provided with projections c, a point b, and an angular seat d; and the top piece shaped to fit the seat d, and secured in position by bolts, substantially as described.
3. A fence-post made up of abase having a iiange e, removable plate h and angular seat d; and a top adapted to t the seat and to be detachably secured in position between the flange e and the plate h, substantially as described.
4. Abase for a fence-post having a seat d,
flange e, seat f, a removable plate h iitting the seat f and lugs g; and adapt-ed to receive and securethe top piece in position, substantially as described. v
5. The combination with the base a having the flange e, seat d, lugs g, and removable plate h; of the bolts j and the top m having a perforation n and recesses o to receive the bolts j, substantially as described.
GEORGE WASHINGTON CLAYTON. lVitnesses:
J. R. BLACK, W. W. ATKINs.
