Description

P 1929 o. J. HELVEY 1,726,955
STREET SIGN Filed Dec. 15, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Sept. 3, 1929.
UNITED STATES OLIVER J. HELVEY, OF GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA.
STREET SIGN.
Application filed December 15, 1928. Serial No. 326,344.
The present invention relates to signs and has particular reference to an article of th1s character adapted for attaching to a street lamp post, or similar supporting structure,
and to provide a post clamping member by means of which a plurality of street signs may be secured to the post and supported in a horizontal position a desired distance above the ground.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a double faced sign of substantially wedge shaped formation in cross section whereby to arrange the sign faces at a slightly upwardly inclined position in order that the same may be exposed to the light of the lamp positioned above the sign for the purpose of illuminating the same.
A further object is to provide an article of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, which may be easily and quickly secured in position upon the post without necessitating the placing of holes or other attaching means in the post, which may be constructed at a relatively low cost and which is otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view with one of the signs broken away and shown in section,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the outer end of the sign,
Figure 4c is a vertical transverse section taken substantially along a line 44 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a similar view of a modified form of sign,
Figure 6 is a view in elevation of the post clamping member,
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view therethrough,
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view therethrough, and
Figure 9 is a plan view of the joint covers.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a post clamping member of annular formation and composed of a pair of transversely split sections connected at one side by a pair of interfitting hook members 6- and having their opposite edges provided with flanges 7 adapted for securing to each other by bolts and nuts 8.
The clamping member 5 is adapted for embracing a street lamp post or other post having a light supported at its upper portion so that the bracket may be secured to the post below such light. Two radially extending lugs 9 are formed on each of the bracket sections and arranged at angles of ninety degrees with respect to each other as clearly illustrated in Figure l of the drawlngs.
The lugs 9 are of a substantially triangular shape in cross section and have their vertical sides and bottom edges beveled as shown at 10 and 11 respectively. Each of the lugs 9 is provided with a horizontally disposed bore 12 with the inner end of the bore, adjacent the inner wall of the clamping member formed into a countersink 13.
The lugs 19 are adapted for insertion in the inner ends of a hollow sign member 14, also constructed of a substantially triangular shaped formation in cross section, more clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, for supporting the sign in a horizontal position with respect to the post.
The outer end of the sign is provided with a cap 15 having an opening formed therein for receiving a screw 16. The screw is formed with an internally threaded bore 17 at its upper end for threadedly engaging one end of a bolt 18 inserted longitudinally through the sign with its inner end extended through the bore 12 of the lug and arranged with the head of the bolt seated in the countersink 13. The countersink 13 has its walls of non-circular formation whereby to secure the bolt against rotation and thus provide for the securing of the parts in assembled position through the attaching of the outer end of the bolt with the screw 16, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The opposite .sides of the sign 14 are inclined slightly upwardly from a vertical plane, as illustrated at 19 with the upper edges of the sign converging toward each other whereby to expose the opposite sides of the sign to the light carried by the post above the sign (not shown) for the purpose of illuminatingsaid sign.
The surface of the sign is adapted to contain a suitable legend for the purpose of designating the name of an intersecting street or if desired may contain any suitable advertising matter.
In order to protect the bolt 8 for securing the sections of the clamping member together a ainst rust, I provide a joint cover 20 constructed of relatively light weight sheet metal shaped in a suitable manner to extend over the flanges 7 with the vertical side edges of the cover bent inwardly as shown at 21 through the opening 22 formed in the sides of the clamping members for positioning the edges of the cover between the post and the inner walls of the clamping section. The sign 14 may be constructed of any suitable light weight sheet metal, shaped substantially in the form of a triangle, as illustrated in Figure 4: of the drawings, or if desired may be cast of solid material and provided at its base portion with an upwardly extending recess 23 for reducing the weight of the sign.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the sign constructed in accordance with my invention will present a highly pleasing and attractive appearance and at the same time the sign faces will be exposed to the light mounted on the post above the sign for illuminating the sign at night.
It is obvious that my invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of theinvention or the scope of the appended claims, and Ivaccordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A sign of the class described comprising an annular clamping member composed of a pair of detachable clamping sections, a lug extendinglaterally from each of said sections, ea-ch disposed angularly with respect to the other, a sign board supported at its inner end upon one of said lugs and an attaching bolt extending outwardly from the lug to said sign board and releasably engageable with the outer end of said signboard.
2. A sign of the class described comprising an annular clamping member composed of a pair of detachable clamping sections, a lug extending laterally from each of said sections, each disposed angularly with respect to" the other, a sign board supported at its inner end upon one of said lugs and an attaching bolt extending outwardly from the lug to said sign board and releasably engageable with the outer end of said signboard, said signboard being of a substantially triangular formation in cross section with its opposite sides inclined upwardly and inwardly. V
3. A sign of the class described comprising an annular post attaching bracket composed of a pair of detachable sections, a plurality of lugs extending radially from said bracket and having bores extending horizontally therethrough, a hollow sign board of triangular shape in cross section adapted for receiving one of said lugs at its inner end, a bolt extended through the bore of said lug and disposed longitudinally within said sign, a cap carried at the outer end of the sign having an opening formed therein and a screw extended through the opening of said cap engageable with the outer end of said bolt for securing the cap and the sign in position upon said lug.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
OLIVER J. HELVEY.
