' GRAVE-MOUND.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 10, 1912.
Be it known that I, WI LIA J. EAnLr, a
citizen of the United States,-residing at .Calawissa, in the county of F ranklinjand State of Missouri. have invented'a new and useful Grave Mound,- of which the following is a specification.
The inventionrelates to improvements in gravemounds. v
The. object of the present invention is .to improve thev construction ofgrave mounds, and to provide asimple, ornamental and in expensive-grave mound, constructed, of slabsof plastic material, and adapted to be read ilyassembled and arranged over agrave to form a:'perm a'n'entmound, and to provide an inclosed bed for'flowers and other plants.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and'pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size andminor details of construction, within the gscope of the claims, may be resorted towith- ,outfdeparting fromjthe spirit or' sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings 3 Figure 1' is a perspective view of a grave mound, constructed 1n ac cordance with this invention. Fig. 2 1s a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the plates.
- responding parts same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of the grave mound. Fig. 4: is a central transverse sectional. view of the .mound. Fig, 5 is a detail horizontal sectional view on the line 55of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 isa detail perspective view 'ofone of the corner braces. Fig. 7 .is .a similar view of one of the splice Patented June 17, 1913.
SerialNo. 719,688.
and having their heads embedded in .the
plastic material, Suitable recesses 9 are formed for the heads of the bolts or screws and are afterward filled-with plastic 111:1- terial to provide smooth exterior faces, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
The screws or bolts 8 are provided in their heads with grooves. to be engaged by the blade of a screw driver, and they are equipped at their inner ends with nuts 10, provided at their inner faces with grooves or corrugations 11, which interlock with corresponding grooves or corrugations 12, of the side portions 5 of thelcorner brace. The grooves or corrugations 12are located above and below the slot 7, and are arranged transversely of the corner brace 4, es clearly shown 1n Fig. 6 of the drawings. In prac tice the nuts are screwed on. the inner endsof the bolts and are interlocked with the side portions of the corner brace before the bolts securely fastened together atthe corners of the grave mound. While only a single corner brace is shown in the drawings at each of the corners of the grave mound yet it will be readily understood that in practice any number of corner braces may be employed. I q p The front side-l'of-the grave mound consists of afsing le slab, and't-he rear side 2 is.
composed. of .two slabs centrally'connected' byspacedupperr and lower splice par -1 provided at their; ends' with'longitudinal slots- 14 and secured-together by bolts or screws 15, equipped with nuts. 16 having grooves or corrugations 17 to interlock with transverse grooves or corrugations 18, ar-
rangedabove and below the slots 14L of the 4 splice bars 13.
plastic material of the slabs.
The heads -f the bolts or screws 15 are arranged in recesses 19, which are filled with plastic material after the bolts have been tightened;
The sectional slab i2 is ce ly connected with the co "nnous slab 1 means of an adjustable transverse brace composed of right and left hand threaded rods 20 and 21 and a sleeve 22, having interior right and left hand screw threads to engage the screw threads of the rods 20 and i l. The outer terminals 23 and 24 are bent at an angle and are embedded in the plastic material of the slabs. 'hen the terminals of the transverse brace are connect-ed to a sectional slab, as illustrated at one side of the grave mound in Fig.3 of the drawings, the terminal portion of the brace fits in registering grooves of the abutting inner end edges of the sections, and theangularly bent portion is extended into a.recess formed in one of the sections and extending from the said grooves. The rod 21 is arranged bet-ween the spacedsplicc bars 13,-and by connecting the sectional slab with the continuous slab, the structure isre ndered rigid and there is no liability of the sectional slab spreading and affecting the solid character of the grave mound. Although one side slab is shown continuous and the other sectional, it will be apparent that both side; slabs may be either continuous or sectional as desired.
The grave mound is designed to have embedded in it the letters of any desired inscription." The letters may be of an suitable material, and emblems and various other ornaments may also be embedded in the The frame formed by the slabs is designed to be filled with earth, which forms an inclosed bed for flowers and other plants. V
\Vhatis claifned is 1. A grave mo'undinclhding side and end slabs set at an inclination and fitted together to form an oblong frame, bolts projecting from the inner faces of the side and end slabs and having their heads embedded in the same, corner braces composed ofspaced side portions arranged at an angle to each other and set in oppositely inclined planes and fitted against the inner faces of the side and end slabs, an intermediate angular-1y disposed upwardly tapered portion spanning the corner joints and connecting the said spaced side portions. the latter being also provided with longitudinal slots to receive provided with registering grooves. one of the sections being al.-o provided with a recess extending t'roni the said grooves, spaced upper and lower splice plates tilting against the inner face of the said side v lab and spanning the joint formed by the section thereof and secured to the same, and a transverse brace extending acrcss the grave mound and having one of its terminals arranged between the abutting ends of the said section and fitting in the registering grooves and bent at an angle to engage with the said recess. v
| 3. A grave mound consisting of an oblong frame and including a side slab composed of sections havingabutting end edges. bolts embedded in the said sections and projecting from the inner faces of the same. spaced upper and lower splice plates titted against the inner faces of the said sections and provided with longitudinal slots through which the projecting portions of the bolts extend, said splice plates having upper and lower grooves or corrugations disposed trans versely of the splice plates, nutsarranged on the inner ends of the bolts and provided with grooves or corrugations engaging with the grooves or corrugations of the splice plates and adjnstablyinterlocking the nuts with the spliceplatesiand a transverse brace extending across the grave mound and pas. ing between the splice plates and secured to the said sections in the joint formed by the same.
