JOHN PERKINS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PARASOLS AND WHIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 60,791, dated March 16, 1875; application filed November 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PERKINS, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Whip and Parasol Combined, for ladies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
My iiwention consists of a hollow staff or whipstock, which receives the whip when not in use. The end of the whip is provided with a ferrule and screw-thread, which is covered by an ornamented handle when incased. The upper end of the stock is provided with a ferrule having a female screw, into which fits the male screw upon the end of the ferrule of the whip, forming a tight joint. Near the upper end of the stock I attach a parasol, which is folded when not in use, so as not to interfere with the use of the whip-stock.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of parasol and staff, a part of the staff being broken away Fig. 2, an elevation of whip detached; Fig. 3, elevation of parasol, whip, and stock combined, in position.
A is the stock, made hollow to receive the whip, which is inclosed by the handle B. The ferrule D, upon the end of the stock, is provided with a female screw, C, into which fits a male screw, E, upon a ferrule of smaller size at the butt end of the whip, forming a tight and sure joint when employed as a whip. Near the top of the stock I attach a parasol, F, which is kept folded, as shown, when not in use, or when the whip is the socket.
When both a riding-whip and parasol are required separately, all that is necessary is to disengage the whip from the stock by unscrewing it, and place the ornamented handle G upon its end and screw the ornamental tip G into the upper end of the stock, and cover the lower or open end with the handle B, when either implement can be used separately.
By this device a combined whip and parasol is provided, and much inconvenience avoided.
I am aware that walking-canes constructed to carry or hold whips, fans, 85s., are old, and such I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
As a new article of manufacture, a parasol having a hollow handle,'A, with screw-thread C, and the whip-extension A having the screw E, the whole adapted and arranged for use as a parasol or whip at will, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JOHN PERRIN S.
