ATES
ATENT OF ICE;
MORRIS FRIEDLANDER, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
FOOT FOR-STOCKINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 644,973, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed April 21, 1 89'9- To 60% whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, Mortars FRIEDLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feet for Stockings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of ref-- erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to reduce the cost of stockings by providing a foot portion which is adapted to be applied to the leg. portion of an old stocking when the original foot portion has been worn out, to thus facilitate repairing of the worn stocking and enable it to be made as serviceable as new at small cost, to provide means for connecting the foot portion and leg portion which shall be more simple, convenient, and expeditious, and to secure other advantages and results,
some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved footpiece for stockings and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and'finally embraced in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in both views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a sect-ion of the same, taken at the ankle-band.
In said drawings, (t indicates the foot portion, and bthe ankle portion, of my improved footpiece for stockings, said footpiece being adapted to connect with the lower end of the leg portion of a stocking cut off at about the ankle. Tothis end the ankle portion b 8X:- tends sufficiently above the foot part a to effect an easy and convenient connection, as will be described. Said ankle portion 1) is provided at its upper extremity with a band 0, of elastic webbing or other suitable elastic material, secured to the outside of the ankle portion of the foot-piece. The said band projects at its upper edge above the upper end of the ankle portion b, and thus serves incidentally to hide the said upper edge from view.
Under some conditions the user of my improved foot portion may desire to sew the upper edge of the ankle portion b to the lower edge of theleg portion,and thus secure the two parts permanently together, and in this case the elastic band 0 covers and conceals the seam and further serves to secure a neater joining and better appearance on the outside in case the two joined ends are of slightly -different diameters because of one having been previously worn or from any other-reason.
The band 0, of elastic webbing, grasps the ankle and holds the stocking parts closely thereto, the upper edge of the footpiece be ing covered or concealed from outside by the said band.
The saidfootpiece thus described can be made and sold very cheaply, and by the use of the same as set forth a worn-out stocking can be made as serviceable as when new, as will be understood.
Having thus described the'invention, what I claim as new is a As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed footpiece for a stocking, comprising a body portion terminating at the ankle and adapted to be sewed to the lower end of the leg portionof an old stocking, and a band 0, of elastic webbing, sewed at its lower edge to said body portion below the top thereof and projecting at its upper free edge above saidtop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of April, 1899.
MORRIS FRIEDLANDER.
