Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,671, dated March 9, 1875; application filed October 12, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH B. HAND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have i11- vented an Improved Shutter-Bower, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to means for holding outside window blinds or shutters in partiallyopen posltions with facility and security.

The present invention consists in a simple attachment composed of a light bar or shackle bent or shaped so as to present three fiat surfaces at different angles on one side, and notched, perforated, and countersunk, as hereinafter set forth, in combination with an ordinary wood-screw, for pivoting it to one shutter or blind, and a wood-screw with a thumbnut to adjustably attach the bar or shackle to the other shutter or blind.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an inside view of a pair of blinds or shutters furnished with this improved bower. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the principal member of the attachment on a larger scale.

This invention is designed for application to outside window blinds or shutters of common wooden forms, and the latter require no special construction, and no preliminary at tachments to adapt them to receive the improved bower.

The latter consists of a rigid bar or shackle, B, an ordinary wood screw, (J, to form its pivot, and a wood-screw, D, with a thumbhead, to constitute its fastening. The bar or shackle 13 consists, by preference, of a light malleable-iron casting, so shaped as to present, at its back, three flat surfaces, 1 2 3, at different angles. A perforation, 4, is formed in that part of the bar or shackle corresponding with the flat surface 1, and central vertical notches 5 6 are formed in those portions corresponding with the flat surfaces 2 3. To

provide for the reception of an ordinary flush-' surface of one shutter or blind, near its outer edge and at convenient height, and the piw otal screw 0 is inserted. The fastening-screw D is then applied to the other shutter or blind at a corresponding point, and one of the notches 5 6 of the bar or shackleB is applied thereto. The fastening-screw D is then tightened by a short turn, and the shutters or blinds are fixed in the position to which they are thus adjusted.

By the employment of one or the other of the notches 5 6 the shutters are bowed more or less, as desired; and when it is desired to close the shutters the bar or shackle is turned into vertical position, and no impediment is offered.

The flat surfaces bear solidly against the faces of the shutters, and when the screws are applied perfectly tight joints are formed, so as to preclude the wear and noise which result from looseness of joint in attachments of this description.

The bower is adapted to be cheaply manufactured, and to be easily and accurately applied by unskilled persons, and no tool other than an ordinary screw-driver is called for in its application.

I am aware that the employment or use of a pivoted and fiat-surfaced, or pivoted and notched, bar, broadly considered, in a shutter-bower, is not new, and this is disclaimed; but I am not aware of any previous device in which such a bar or shackle is adapted to be pivoted and clamped by means of simple wood screws, as in this improved shutter bower.

The following is claimed as new in this invention, namely:

The bar or shackle B, having fiat surfaces 1 2 3 at different angles on its back, and a perforation and notches, 4 5 6, formed in its respective portions corresponding with the flat surfaces, and countersunk, as described, in combination with wood-screws O D, for pivoting and fastening the shackle, the fastening-screw D having a thum b-head, by which to manipulate it, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
