APPLIGATION FILED FEB. 17, 1913.

INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STONE, OF APOLLO, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN-RETAINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN STONE, a cit-izen of the United States of America, residing at Apollo, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Retainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a curtain retainer, and the object of my invention is to provide foldable devices than can be attached to the edges of a window frame for holding the lower ends of lace curtains, draperies and portieres out of the road or to the sides of the window frame whereby a view through the window will not be obstructed and plenty of light can be obtained.
I attain the above object by a simple, durable and inexpensive device that is sus ceptible to any desired finish and ornamentation whereby it will harmonize with the metallic fixtures of the window frame and present a neat and attractive appearance.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a window frame provided with the retainer, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the retainer partly broken away, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the retainer, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional View of the same.
A. retainer in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong face plate 1 having the ends thereof provided with openings 2 to accommodate the heads of screws 3 or other fastening means employed for securing the retainer at the side of a window frame 4:. The face plate 1, intermediate the ends thereof is provided with an offset portion 5 and with a central opening 6. The offset portion 5 removes the central portion of the face plate 1 out of engagement with the frame 1 and said offset portion has a right angular extension 7 that is bent into a plane in parallelism with the offset portion of the face plate and provided with an opening 8 alining with the Specification of Letters Patent.

opening 6. The extension 7 cooperates with the offset portion 5 of the face plate 1 in forming a slot to receive the apertured end 9 of an arm 10.
Extending through the apertured end of the arm 10, the openings 6 and 8 into the frame a is a headless screw 11 and screwed upon the outer end of said screw is a knurled nut 12. The nut 12 can be tightened against the extension 7 of the face plate 1 and with this extension resilient or of malleable material it can be clamped against the apertured end 9 of the arm 10 to hold said arm against the ofiset portion 5 of the face plate and in an adjusted position. When the arm 10 is at right angles to the window frame or even at an acute angle thereto the lower end of a curtain 13 can be draped over said arm and supported at one side of the Window frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The ofiset portion of the face plate provides clearance for the foldable arm 10, whereby said arm can be swung into parallelism with the side of the frame and thus remain in an inactive position when the curtain hangs in the usual manner.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a curtain retainer, a window frame, a face plate secured to said window frame and having a central offset portion, an extension carried by the offset portion of said face plate and bent into parallelism with the outer face of the offset portion to provide a slot, a screw extending through said extension and said face plate into said frame, an arm pivotally mounted upon said screw within said slot and capable of being swung at an angle to said frame, and means in connection with said screw for holding said arm in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN STONE. lVitnesses:
THOMAS KERR, J, P. HANNA.
