Description
BARTHEL ERBE, 0F PITTSBURG, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SAMUEL H. JACOBUS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-DOOR KEYS.
Specificaiion forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,660, dated March 9, 1875; application filed February 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTHEL ERBE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Door Key; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereoi", reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a side view ot a folding key, the parts being detached. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the key when opened: Fig. 4 is a similar View of the key being closed; and Fig. 5, side and edge views of the sleeve or lip piece.
Like letters refer to like parts whenever they occur.
My invention relates to that class of foldin g-keys having iiat adjacent faces for folding the parts; and it consists in providing a suitable sleeve or lip, located at the point of riveting, to limit the movement of the parts, together with shoulders formed on the handle, to preserve the outline and finish of the handle, whereby an easily-constructed and effective folding-key is obtained.
lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The key is composed of two parts, or and b, upon one of which, nea-r the point of riveting, d, is formed or secured a sleeve or lip, c, to receive the end of the second piece and to support the rivet. This piece o may be a detachable or separate piece held by the same rivet which pivots the two parts of the handle, or it may be struck up with the blank and then folded over. In either case it will be open upon one edge, so as to permit a limited movement of the parts. The second part of the handle is preferably rounded, as at e, to permit its free movement within sleeve or lip o, and is cut away or provided With shoulders, as at m n, the depth of which correspond to the thickness of material in the sleeve, so that the edges of the handle will be in line both when the key is open and folded. When the key is open, as shown in Fig. 3, the further inotion of the parts in that direction is prevented by the edge of the piece and by shoulder m formed thereon; and Wh en the key is closed, as in Fig. 4, the motion of the parts in the opposite direction is arrested by the edge ofthe key and shoulder n. It" either part be held the other part can describe a haltcircle turning on the rivet, and the key can be opened and closed at one side only.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the parts a b, provided with the sleeve or lip o and the shoulders m n, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
In testimony whereof I, the said BARTHEL ERBE, have hereunto set my hand.
BAR'lI-IEL ERBE.
