LEV GRISWOLD, OF JOHNSTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID HAYS AND NATHAN P. WELLS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEYS FOR LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,168, dated August 31, 1875; application filed February 2, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEV GRIswoLD, of J ohnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a Key for Locks, of which the following is a specification:
Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sectional views of my key. Fig. 1 represents the key closed, and Fig. 2 exhibits the same open and inserted into the lock, outlines of which are shown in dotted lines 3 3 A represents the barrel or main shaft of the key, to which the other working parts are applied, differing only in two essential points from those described in the patent of Charles E. Pierce, dated February 24, 1874, and numbered 147,787. These I will endeavor to point out. B represents the pivoted handle, which turns on a pin, 0, which is secured in the barrel A. At the rivet or pin d the connectingrod E is attached, the opposite end of said connecting-rod being hinged to the bit f, as shown in the drawing, the handle operating the bit fthrough the agency of the connecting-rod E, in the usual way. I use a connecting-rod which is bent at the point g, as shown in the drawing, which acts as a spring, both to the handle B and to the bit f, by pressing one side or the other of the pins on which said handle and bit are pivoted, tending thereby to keep the same closed or open, as is desired, the point of its opposite pressure being against and within the barrel A at the point 9, Figs. 1 and 2. This desideratuin could not be attained with a straight connecting-rod, as will be readily understood. I form a shoulder or annular ring, H, on the barrel A, at a suitable distance from the pivoted bit f, which gages the depth that the key is to be inserted into the lock, which is pointed out in the drawing by dotted lines 3 3 Fig. 2.
By means of the shoulder H the key can be inserted into the look from either side thereof, and the bit f will come in contact with the tumblers and bolt at the same point.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the barrel A, handle B, and bit f, the spring connecting-rod E, bent at g, as shown, whereby the bit is held in the closed or open position, substantially as described.
