FOLDING HAMMER AND BOX-OPENER COMBINED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,905, dated November 18, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, REINHOLD STEINECKE, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented an Improved Folding Hammer and Box-Opener Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view showing the hammer and box-opener when folded with one side broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the instrument when opened. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the position of the spring and box-opener.

The object of this invention is to produce an improved tool for opening and closing cigar-boxes.

My invention consists, mainly, in pivoting the shank of the hammer to the handle of a pocket-knife-liketool, in combination with a box-opener which projects from the opposite end of the said handle and over which the hammer is adapted to fold.

In the drawings, the letter 0 represents the handle of my improved tool, the same being mainly construct-ed like the handle of a suitable pocket-knife. In fact, it may be a pocketknife handle, as one or more knife-blades G and the like may be carried by it in the usual manner.

A isthe hammer, the same being a block of metal of sufficient weight for the purpose of driving small nails into cigar-boxes and the like. This hammer is rigidly attached to a shank B and suitably pivoted to the handle 0. When the hammer is to be used as in Fig. 2, its shank will be twice as long as the handle O, and therefore far more effective.

F is a spring secured within the handle 0, bearing against a suitable shoulder of the shank B in the manner usual with respect to the locking of blades of pocket-knives. This spring F, however, is in this instance continued at its outer end-namely, the end farthest away from the pivot-so as to form a fiat blade H, which extends beyond the handle C. This blade is the box-opener, being tapered at the end and notched at the side to allow it to be inserted between the cover and the body of the cigar-box to pry the same open, and also to permit its use as a nail-extractor. It will be perceived that this blade lies flatthat is, on a plane which is parallel with the axis of the pivot. By making the blade H in this form it is covered by the hammer A and concealed when the hammer is folded down, as in Fig. 1, so that the instrument may be carried in the pocket without injury to the garments; but when the hammer is folded out, as in Fig. 2, the said blade constitutes a rigid projection from the handle 0, and the hammer A is in this position of parts available for use as such, the handle 0 being employed to grasp it. By making the said blade H in one piece with the spring F considerable labor in the manufacture of the instrument is saved.

Having described my invention, what I claim'is 1. The handle C, carrying a rigidly-proj eot-' ing blade at one end, and the pivoted shank B, having the hammer A at the other end, said hammer A being adapted to be folded upon the said blade, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. A blade H, made in one piece with the spring F and combined with the handle 0, from which it projects, and with the hammer A and its hammer-shank B, against which said spring bears, said hammer being adapted to fold upon said blade, as specified.
