Description

meeneem @me 'elim Errol-IEEEv e. en lRDNER,` 0E ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
` same die.
k Letters Potent No. 105,934', dated August 2, 1870.
imrnovnMENr 1N Mone or SAND nnvrcns ron MAKING GAsxnTs ron STEAM Pooxi .The `Schedule referred to ln'these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it rizay-.concct-.i Be it known that I, MITCHELL C. GARDNER, of the city of Rochester, county of `Monroe apdQState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode ofMaking Gaskets used for .packing steam-joints in. steam-engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is ra' full and exact descripti'on thereof', reference `being had tothe accompanying-drawing making a part ofthe specilcation.
The nature of myimprovement relatesto the makf ing of gaskets for the packing of joints in steam-engines out of strips of copper or any other exiblemetal,
`.rolled to. perfect thickness,in such manner as to mike a-gasket'which, when putlhetween twoplaned surfaces and screwed down, a perfect steam-joint is made, l at once perfect, not liable to be cut ont, and made imperfect by the pressnreof steam; and', further, the
l `saving of materialby making'` a gasket in` this way, `iusteadof cutting it out of a whole sheet in the ordi# nary way, thereby saving material to a great extent.
Figure 1, sheet 1, is a view` of a gasket made of copper onauy flexible metal, cntinpstrips thewidth desired, annealed, and run through a rolling-milhand made of even thickness.
t The lock or joint in the corner is `made with a die and punch, constructed inrsuch manner that they will cut the.` male `and female parts of the lock with the the bottom, the female part i being drawn out at the J end or side, as maybe required.` E is a plate, to guide thepunch to die D.
is a'sectional view of the punch for cut-` i C C C Qare four'spiral springs, to force E and D apart to receive the-copper for the joint or lock.
` K K K K 'are four bolts, `to confine the copper be: tween E and D, Atdperfect beariilgft'o" receive theblow for cutting' the joint or corner.
B is an India-rubber spring, for throwing the punch out when struck with a hammer.
vF is a clasp over the collar of the punch, taconfinethe punch down to a given point to receive the blow.
AA is an end view ofthe punch.
Should one side of the die be either larger or smaller, than the other,l the discrepancy is obviatedby the i parts going together in the same position that' they1 are cut, as shown in' the drawing, the round part iu the lock being set out, when necessary, with a punch made concave on the innerv circle of the endand convx on the outer, thereby making a steam-joint around the circle of 4the lock. This will be necessary only when the engine ison repair, and not then, if proper care is used in taking the work apart.
Having thus fully described my improvement,
What ,I claim as my improvement, and desire to y,
1. The manner or mode of making gaskets used for packing steam-jonts in steam-engines, substantially as specified and set forth. i
2. The punching device, for making the corner of the gasket, substantially asv specified and for the pur-l poses set forth. t
' M. C. GARDNER. [n s.]
