IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-3080M SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,658, dated March 9, 1875; application fihd February 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES S. EDMUNDs, of Princeton, in the county of Caldwell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Bosom Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a pocket.

The invention relates to means for causing shirt-bosoms to stand out prominently and evenly from the breast of the wearer. It will first be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then substantially indicated in the summary.

In the drawing, A A represent two longitudinal side strips of elastic sheet metal, the two being preferably tapered decreasing] y toward the bottom, and connected, by curved or otherwise shaped rib -strips B, with the straight middle longitudinal strip A. At the top of these strips A A is placed a comparatively broad plate, 0, which has a curved recess, c, to fit about the neck of wearer, and a headed stud, 0 just over the middle strip A, while at diliercnt points thereunder may be placed one or more headed studs, a a, and rigid little nuts to a a. The buttons or headed studs 0 and a are connected by a cord, 0 through which the curvature of the breastplate may be graduated. The cord will be always attached to the top stud c and when a vest is worn, to the highest stud on the middle strip A, but when a vest is not worn, to the lowest stud a. The nuts are arranged to receive the screw by which the shirt-stud is fastened to the shirt-bosom. D is the lower or bottom plate. On each end of the plate 0 D are attached the projections 01 d d d, which fit into metallic pockets E, which are sewed or otherwise fastened into the shirt. These projections hold the supporter always in its true relative position, while the pockets prevent injury to the shirt.

This shirt-bosom supporter is preferably made of a single piece of metal, although it may be made of several pieces, nicely adjusted, and fastened together in any convenient manner, without departing from the principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A shirt-bosom supporter consisting of elastic longitudinal metallic strips A A A, connected by ribs B and plates 0 D, constructed in the manner and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with a shirt-bosom supporter, constructed as described, the buttons 0 a on the under side, and the cord 0 as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The nuts a a a on the middle strip A,
