COLLAR OR CUFF BUTTON.

This invention relates to collar or cufi buttons and has for its object to produce a novel and improved construction which may be quickly and easily inserted in thebuttonholes of the shirt band and collar or the cult to retain the same in their proper condition.

Another object of my invention is to pro duce a collar button preferably constructed of metal or other equivalent, resilient mate rial, which is very strong and durable, extremely simple in construction, highly eiiicient in operation and use, practical, and otherwise capable of being manufactured at a low cost whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.

To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawing, similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout all the views, of

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of the collar or cuff button.

Figure 2 is a similar view with the head standing substantially at right angles to the base or outer head of the button.

Figure 3 is a view through the button showing the inner head in dotted line position.

Figure 4 is a modified form of the invention.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate correspending parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the outer head or base of the button, preferably constructed of resilient metal and as shown, is rectangular in formation but may be 01'? any other desired shape as manufacturing; necessities and demand may require. llhe material of the outer head or base is bent on itself as indicated at 6, 7, and then upwardly as indicated by numerals 8 and 9, substantially at right angles to the outer head or base, above referred to. The members 8, 9, constitute what may be termed the shank of the button, and as shown in their normal positions, said members are separated or flared outwardly near their upper end. The material of the but-- ton, or in other words, the metal is struck out between the upwardly, extending portions or the shanks and the top portion of the base, "forming the c'ammed surfaces 10 for a purpose presently to appear.

"The inner head of the button consists of a somewhat elliptical plate 11 of metal, bent inwardly upon itself as at 12 and then spaced sufficiently from the top 11 thereof so that it may be passed through the openings 13 of the shank as clearly shown by Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. The free end 14 and the bottom portion 15 of said plate is locked within the bent end 16, which completes the assembly of the base and the inner head above referred to.

It will be understood that due to the resiliency of the material of the inner head well as the shank, that as the inner head is moved downward, for instance, to the dotted line position, as shown in Figure 3, either to the left or to the right, there 'will be a slight pressure exerted on either the members 8 or 9 so that they are urged slightly toward each other and in contiguous relation, as shown 'by Figure 2, in which position, the inner head 11 is permitted to lie substantially at right angles to the outer head or base as said inner head rides upwardly on the cam surfaces 10. On the other hand, when the inner head is moved from the vertical to the horizontal position,-the pressure on the member 8 or 9 is thus released, in which instance, the upper ends thereof spread apart, permitting the said head to lie in the horizontal or locked polsition, when inserted through the button- In the form of the invention as shown by Figure 4c, the inner head 17 is formed similarly to the head 11, described in connection with Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, but it will be observed that in this form of the invention, I dispense with the cam surfaces 10, permitting the free rotation of the said head 17 through the slot or opening 18 of the shank. In this form. of the invention, the base 19 is also bent inwardly on itself and then upwardly, forming the shanks 20, 21. In this form of the invention, however, it will be immediately recognized that the resiliency of the metal and particularly the shanks, permits the slight movement of the said shanks toward each other and the inner head is moved to the vertical position and on the other hand, when the said inner head is in the horizontal position, the pressure is released on said shanks to move outwardly or space apart as shown by Figure 1 of the drawings.

While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, l realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form oi the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangen'ient of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A collar or cul'l' button of the class described comprising a base bent upon itself and then at right angles forming a pair of substantially parallel, flat shanks, said shanks having an opening therethrough, and a. head resiliently locked to the top of said shanks and movable to a horizontal or vertical position relative to the base, and means for raising the head on the shank when said head is moved to vertical position.

2. A collar or cult button of the class described comprising a base bent upon itself and then at right angles forming a pair of substantially parallel flat shanks spaced slightly at their upper ends, said shanks having an opening therethrough formed by punching lips out of said shanks, an inner head locked to the shanks and adapted to expand and contract the same when moved from a horizontal to a vertical position rela-" tive to the base, and said lips arranged to strengthen said shanks.

3. A collar or cull button of the class described comprising a base bent upon itself and then at right angles thereto forming a pair of substantially flat, parallel resilient shanks slighty spaced at their upper ends, said shanks having an opening therethrough, an inner head extending through the said. opening and above the top of the said shanks and locked thereto, said head being movable to a vertical. and horizontal position relative to the base and adapted to expand and contract the said shanks and to lock the said head in its different positions, and cam menibe rs on said shank for forcing said head into locking position.

A collar or cuff button of the class described eon'iprising a base bent upon itself and then at right angles thereto forming a pair of substantially flat, parallel shanks slightly spaced at their upper ends, said shanks having a square opening therethrough formed by outstruck lips constitutin g a cam surface on said base adjacent the openings, an inner head passing through said openings and above the top of the shanks and locked thereto, said head being movable over the cam surface whereby it may be set and locked from a horizontal to a vertical position relative to the said base.
