This invention relates to improvements in toys.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of a toy, such as a doll, which may simulate a child, other human character, or animated objects.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a doll preferably formed of sheet material, such as paper, composition material, or the like, embodying features which render the same anatomically correct in so far as location and movement of parts is concerned. 7

A further object of this invention is the provision of a doll or analogous figure, including supporting body and head portions which are gradually turned laterally with respect to each other, so that as used in connection with a doll simulating a child, the feet portions may be turned sidewise, the body or torso gradually turned toward the front, and the head facing substantially to the front. a

A further object of this invention is the provision of a doll embodying a novel supporting arrangement or legconstruction,

A further object of this invention is the provision of a doll or analogous toy including a body portion, and laterally extending arms which are free to movewith respect to the body portion and disposed inpartially overlapping relationtherewith- I A further object of this invention is the provision of novel means to facilitate relative assemblage of the partsof the doll.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a toy cut-out preferably simulating a doll, embodying novel features to facilitate the cutting of the parts of the doll so that they may be easily assembled to provide a figure, which as to parts is substan tially anatomically correct. 7 e

Other objects and advantages of this in vention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A generally designates the improved doll, which may be die stamped, or the parts of which maybe provided in the form of cutout parts upon a sheet of material 10, such paper. Y I Referring to this invention as provided in the form of a cut-out, the sheet of material 10 is preferably elongated and rectangular in formation, having main parts 11 and 12 depicted thereon representative of front and rear views respectively of the child or other object which the doll represents. Each of the main parts or sections 11 and 12 preferably include a body portion 13; sup porting leg portion 14; and head portion 15. The relative positioningcf the parts 13, 14 and 15 of each section 10 and 11 is important, since they determine the posture which the child assumes in the completed figure. A preferred arrangement is that of illustrating the leg portions 14- of the main parts 11 and 12 as facing sideways, so that the feet 17 at the ends of-the leg portions 14 are so turned as to provide a maximum bearing surface, in that the same are shown in side elevation. The torso or body portions 13 turn gradually to the. front and. rear 'upwardly of the legs 14, till the head portions of the parts 11 and 12 are respectively turned substantially full front and full rear. l/Vhile this arrangement is desirable, the relative positioning of parts may be somewhat different, as used in connection with other features of this invention, although a benefit resulting therefrom is that of pro viding a figured toy which will stand in a perfectly natural position, affording a maximum supporting surface, and yet permit of substantially full front and rear views of the figure upwardly of the body or torso.

As the front and rear views or main parts 11 and 12 respectively are adapted for folding or positioning in abutting conformii'ig relation, a novel expedient has been prd vided in connection with the formation of the doll as a cut-out, which is illustrated in Figures land 10 of the drawings. The parts 11 and 12 are positioned in loi'igitudinal relation with the head' portions 15 thereof in proximate spaced relation. A strip of material is delineated upon the sheet 10, intermediate the head portions 15, by means of arcuate side lines 21, which are preferably dotted and designate cutting lines. This strip of material 20 is provided with a straight line 23 thereon, extending transversely and at right angles to the line in which the parts 11 and 12 lie, so that after said parts or sections 11 and 12 have been out out upon their marginal lines, they may be relatively folded upon the straight line 23; the strip 20 not having at yet been disconnected from the head portions 15. It is obvious that the straight line 23 thus furnishes a guide whereby the main parts of the invention may be relatively positioned in abutting and conforming relation. The

position of the strip 20, or rather its appearance, after folding of the head portions 15 upon each other, is illustrated in Figure 10. The function of the strip 20 ha ing been performed, the same may be severed from the head portions 15 by cutting along the arcuate marginal lines 25 designating the top of the head of the doll figure. From th s description. it is obvious that the strip of material; 20 is to be discarded after the folds 11 and 12 have been placed in relative positions, and that said strip forms no part of the finished figure, but merely furishes a guide for the placing of the front and rear parts of the doll, as it can be readily understood and is found in practice that, a child or other person cannot accurately place the parts in conforming and abutting relation as accurately as is possible when done as herein described. There are of course no abrupt edges or outstanding parts of the head portions after severance of the strip 20,: since both: head portions '15 are out upon a single upper arcuate line.

The parts 30 as before mentioned provide inner folds for each leg 14, which are adapted for folding upon the lines 36 or in the space intermediate the bottoms of feet 1'? and 31; thus insuring that the legs of the completed figure are of stable con; struction and provide finished inner and outer flaps, as is illustrated in Figures 2 and 8 of the drawings, showing inner and outer sides of both legs.

The sections 11 and 12 when placed in abutting relation as hereinbefore described, are pasted, glued or otherwise secured to ether throughout the major abutting surracesthereof, although it is preferred that at a point just upwardly of the lower marginal edge 35, defining the bottom of the body portions 13, said strips 11' and '12 are spread apart, as to accommodate the upper ends of the leg flaps 30 intermediate the lower portions of the body sides 13, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 8 of the drawings. Thus, the legs of the completed figure are in separated substantially V- shaped relation and freely movable with respect to each other, due to flexibility of material from which the doll is formed. In

the completed figure, it is preferred that the legs of the doll be disposed in planes which are slightly overlapping, with one leg to one side of the other, so that the supporting surfaces provided by the bottom edges 36 of the doll feet are relatively extended to provide a maximum length'of supporting sin-face, consistent with a natural wine 1 the child assumes.

Referring again to the part or section 11' of the doll, and as depicted in Figure 1 of the drawings, the other arm portion'48 thereof is preferably bent so that the hand and forearm portion thereof areformed as a. The marginal edges 49 of this arm portion 48 which are outlined upon the body 13, are in contrast in any approved manner with respect to the other marginal edges of the section 11 to denote cutting lines.

From the foregoing description of the arm construction of the improved doll, as completed, it is obvious that the arms may be located in various relations with respect to each other and with respect to the body of the figure; the overlapping portions-of the arms and the body. portion, except at the sockets of the arms, being unsecured so that the arms will appear natural and outstanding from the body portion, so that no matter what the posture of the child'or posi tioning of the arm and body parts, garments may be placed upon the doll.

The term doll as used in this specification and in the claims'is not to belimited to the figure of a child, but is to be broadly construed, and may include persons, animals,

animated figures, and otherjobjects in -connection with which novel features of this invention may be employed. WVhile the pr'e- I ferred embodiment is that of a cut-out asillustrated in Figure 1, it is contemplated to die cut the various parts of the invention, 7 or form the same as complete.

Various changes in the shape, size or arrangement of parts may be made to the form of the invention,-without departing from the spirit'of this invention or the scope'of the claims. i v I I claim:

1. A' cut-out doll having a body portion,

a head portion and only two pendant log portions at least partially overlapping,said leg portions each terminating in a laterally directed foot portion and being formed re spectively on separate body parts which are secured'together face to face, at least one leg portion being free to be deflected in a plane inclined to the plane of the other leg portion and to the plane of the body portion, which plane it intersects at a point sufficiently adjacent the center of the gravity of the doll 'to form with the other leg portion a complete means to support the 'doll erect, each of the leg portions hayingjtwo registering'and facing parts, one of which is an extension of a body part, the other being positioned overta face of the first men- 2. A cut-out doll having a body'portion, a head portion and only two pendant leg por-' tions at least partially overlapping, and each terminating in a footportion, the two foot portions being laterally extended in the same a direction, said leg portions being formed'respectively on separate body parts which are secured together face to face and at least one leg portion being free to be deflected in a plane inclined to the plane of the other leg portion and to the plane of the body portion, which plane it intersects at a point sufficiently adjacent the center of the gravity of the doll to form with the other 'leg portion a complete means to support the doll erect, each of the leg portions and foot portions having two registering and facing parts, one of which is an extension of a body part, the other positioned over a face of the first mentioned leg and foot part.

A cut-out doll having a body portion, a head portion and only two pendant leg por tions at least partially overlapping, and each terminating in a foot portion, the two foot portions being laterally extended in the same direction, said leg portions being formed respectively on separate body parts which are secured together and at least one leg portion being free to be deflected in a plane inclinedto the )lane of the other le )ortion and to the plane of the body portion, which plane it"intersects at a point sufficiently adjacent the center of the gravity of the doll to form with the other leg portion a com-v plete means to support thedoll erect, each of the leg portions having two facing registering parts, at least one of whic'his an extension of a body part, the other being folded over the inner face of the first mentioned leg part and having a concealed terminus.

4:. A cut-outrdoll having a body portion and a head portion formed of two parts secured face to face, the doll having only two pendant leg portions, said legs being formed one on each body part and one being free to be deflected in a plane inclined to the plane of the other leg portion and to the plane of the body portion, which plane it intersects at a point suifioientlyadjacent thev center of the gravity of the doll to form with the other leg portion a complete means to support the doll erect, said leg portions each having an extension to form afacing part, the extension being folded over one face of the leg portion and registering therewith.

5.- A cut-out doll having a body portion and a head portion formed of' two parts secured face to face, the doll having only two pendant leg portions, said legs being formed one on each body part and at least one being free to be deflected in a plane inclined to the plane of the other leg portion and to the plane of the body portion, which plane it intersects at a point sufficiently' adjacent the center of the gravity of the doll to form with the other leg portion a com 'plete means to support the doll erect, said leg portions each having a longitudinalex-r tension to form a facing part, the extension being folded at the terminus of the leg por-' tion upwardly Over one face of the leg as tion and registering therewith,

6. A blank for a cut-out doll having mark in}; forffront and frear doll parts, each part comprising a body portion, a single main leg portion and a single auxiliary leg portion, the body portions being adapted to be secured together face to face to make complete doll body, and the main and auxiliary leg portions of each part being of substantially the same shape and arrai'iged adjacent one another and having substantially the same contour, whereby the auxiliary leg portion may be folded over the adjacent mainleg ortion; 1 7. A blank for a cut out doll having markingfor front and rear doll parts, each part comprising a body portion, a single main leg portion and a single auxiliary leg portion, the body portions being adapted to be secured together face to face to make a complete doll body, and the main and auxiliary leg portions of each part being of substantially the same shape and arranged adjacent one another in longitudinal alignment whereby the auxiliary leg portion may be folded over the adjacent main leg portion.

8. A blank for a cut-out doll having marking for front and rear doll parts, said parts being arranged adjacent one another in' substantially longitudinal. alignment whereby the blank may b'efolded to bring the parts face to" face, each of said parts same contour and, beingarranged adjacent oneanother whereby the blank may be again folded between the main and auxiliary leg portions to bring the same face to face, the legzportions of each part making a complete doll leg independent of the leg portions on the other part;-
