WILLIAM sHILHAN', orr Yoann. y.
r'IGURnY Toy. i
Application mea may 24, '1921.1 A'serial No. 472,031.
To all whom t may' concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM SHILHAN, a citizen of the United States, and 'aresident of the city of New York, Welfare Island, borough of Manhattan, in the county of 'New Yorkand StateofNew York, have invented a new and Improved Figure Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements 1n toys, an object of the invention being to provide a toy which can be sold in the form of a blank having a plurality of fold lines displayed thereon and which may be assembled by the purchaser. y A further object is to provide a toy which will be difficult to assemble and therefore inter-esting and amusing` to children, and a toy which will be simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, and exceedingly inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other obj ects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel featuresv of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the blank completely folded to form a toy Figure 2 is a plan view of the blan Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the first steps of folding the blank;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the blank in partially folded position; and
Figure 5 is a similar view illustrating the blank almost completely folded.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a square blank upon one face of which, certain fragments of a picture such as 2 are displayed. The blank is scored or creased to provide a plurality of fold lines which will be hereinafter described, and when the blank is properly folded, the picture will be assembled and the completed article seen in Figure 1 will have the appearance and general form of a bird or other animal.
It is to be understood that the particular method of folding the blank shown in the drawings is merely illustrative of one 0f many ways in which my invention may be accomplished and that I wish to protect the idea of printing, lithographing, painting, or otherwise displaying pictures of a represen- -tation of van animal or other ligure upon a blank and then foldingthe Vblank .to form the completed toy figure; 1
"Referring now more specifically .to the particular -blank illustrated in the drawings,
it will' be seen that the squareblank 1 is provided with a pair of main diagonal fold lines 3, 3. Fold lines 4 and 4 connect the intermediate points of opposite sides of the sheet and intersect the diagonal fold lines at the center of the sheet. Midway between the fold lines 4 and the edges of the sheet, fold lines 5, 5 are provided extending in parallelism with the fold line 4. Similar lines 5, 5 are parallel with the line 4 The ends of the lines 4 and 4 are connected by fold lines 6. The adjacent ends of the lines 5 and 5 are connected by short fold lines 7 extending across the corners of the sheet and in parallelism with the lines 6. Fold lines 8 parallel to the lines 6 and 7 connect the points of inter-section of the lines 4 and 5 and the lines 4 and 5.
To produce the finished toy, the blank is first folded on all of the lines 6 and the corners of the blank are then folded back upon the lines 7, as illustrated in Figure 3.
The lsheet is then folded simultaneously f along several lines. It is folded inwardly on they ends of the line 4, under on the intermediate portion of the. line 4, inwardly on those portions of the lines 5 which are indicated at 5, and under on the intermediate portion of one line 5. The portions'of the sheet which include the opposite ends of the line 4 are folded in opposite directions away from the plane of the intermediate portion of this line. The entire blank is then folded inwardly upon the lines 8 and is of the shape seen in Figure 1. The completely folded blank includes a main body portion 9, upon which the body of the animal appears, a forwardly presented extension 10 at its upper end upon which the head of the animal appears and a rearwardly extendin portion 11 whereon the animals tail is disp ayed. When folded as described the toy may be stood in an upright position on a suitable support by resting the same upon the lower end of the body portion and upon the edge of the tail section 11 defined by the folding line 4.
Many designs might be substituted for the one illustrated. Numerous expedients might be resorted to in folding and scoring the blank. Therefore although I have illnstrated one of the preferred embodiments of my invention it will be apparent that various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from the invention and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claim` I claim:
For forming a substantially flat toy With representations of objects respectively on the opposite sides thereof, a blank having separated parts of two objects on one face thereof, fold lines upon Which the blank is to be folded and refolded in the formation of the toy With the separated parts in ob* ject forming relationship, there being relatively diagonal groups of substantially parallel fold lines between Which the separated parts of the objects are located, said blank being foldable and refoldable along certain of the parallel lines to provide rectangularly disposed folds surrounding a central portion, said folds and central portion being foldable-npon themselves respectively on the remaining fold linesV to complete the toy.
