To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIEN STRANDERS, a subject of the King of England, and resident of the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to display devices adapted for use for advertising purposes, and particularly to display devices of the type composed of cardboard or other analogous material.
An object of the invention is to provide a display device so constructed that matter depicted on the device may be caused to give the optical impression of being seen in perspective.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the character above indicated which may be readily collapsed or folded into a flat article without protuberances, thus enabling the device to be handled or shipped very conveniently and without requiring the exercise of care to avoid breakage or-other injury to the device.
An important feature of-the invention resides in providing a display device having a main display portion combined with auxiliary display portions disposed rearwardly of the main display portion in planes spaced from each other, and each of said auxiliary display portions being arranged in register with an opening in the adjacent display portion on the front side of said auxiliary por- In accordance with another feature 0 the invention, the improved display device )referably includes a main display ortion comprising leaves movable toward and from each other between collapsed and display 0- sitions and an auxiliary display portion isposed rearwardly of the main display portion in the display position and comprising leaves adapted to lie in the planes of the leaves of the main display portion when the device is collapsed.

The cut-out portions thus formed are in turn out along straight lines 22 and 2 1 spaced from their upper and lower edges respectively, thelines of cut 22 and 24'being extended into the base portion 10 beyond the first-mentioned cut-out portions as indicated at 26 and 28 respectively. The material from which the leaves 12 and the base portion 10 are formed is creased or folded at the points of junction of the leaves with the sides of the base portion 10, as shown by the lines 29, thus providing a line of pivot of the leaves 12 with respect to the base portion. The cut-out portions resulting from the lines of cut 14 and.16 are creased with respect to the base portion 10 along their inner edges 30, and the smaller or innermost cut-out portions are creased withrespect to the base portion 10 along the line 34. The creases or folds 30 and 84 enable the cut-out portions to move pivotally on the base portion 10 when the leaves 12 are swung outwardly away from each other about the lines of pivot 29.
The cut-out portions formed by the lines of cut 14 and 16 are also folded along lines 36 where they join the leaves 12, and along lines 38 adjacent to and in parallelism with the lines 36. In this manner such cut-out portions are formed into leaves 40 and comparatively narrow strips of material 42 connecting the leaves 40 to the leaves 12. The connecting strips 42 are of a width substantially equal to the degree of extension of the leaves 40 into the base portion 10 along the lines 18 and 20. The innermost cut-out portions formed by the lines of cut 22 and 24 are creased or folded along the lines 44 where they join the leaves 40 and are also folded along the lines 46 adjacent to and parallel with the folds 44. The innermost cut-out portions are thereby divided into leaves 48 and parts 50 intervening between the creases 44 and 46 and serving to connect the leaves 48 with the leaves 40. The width of the connecting parts 50 is substantially equal to the length of the lines 26 and 28 which measure the extent of projection of the leaves 48 into the base portion 10 in excess of the projection of the leaves 40.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that when the leaves 12 are swung outwardly about their pivots 29 so as to lie in a common plane, as shown' in Fig. 3, such leaves provide a main display portion 52, and the openings 54 formed in the leaves 12 by the cutting of the leaves 40 therefrom communicate with, each other forwardly of the base portion 10 to provide a large centrally disposed opening which reveals the leaves 40 and 48. The leaves 40 in turn present an auxiliary display portion 56 and the openings 58 in the leaves 40 caused by the cutting out of the leaves 48 from them merge into'a single central opening through which the second or inner auxiliary display portion 60 constituted by the leaves 48 ,may be seen. The advantages of making the connecting strips of material 42 and 50 f widths equal to the extent of the projection of the leaves 40 and 48 into the base portion 10 beyond the inner edges of the leaves 12 and 40, respectively, are that when the leaves 12 are moved to display position, as shown in Fig. 3, the leaves 40 and 48 are positioned in planes parallel to each other and to the plane of the leaves 12, the connecting n1embers'42 and 50 being arranged perpendicular to the planes of the leaves, and that upon movement of the leaves 12 toward each other into collapsed position, the connecting parts 42 and 50 and the leaves 40 and 48, respectively, are drawn fully into the openings 54 and 58 of the leaves 12-and 40, so that the leaves 40 and 48 and the connecting parts 42 and 50 lie in the plane of the leaves 12.
In its display position'the device hereinbcfore described provides amain display portion 52 enclosing the auxiliary display portions 56 and 60, and an auxiliary display portion 56 enclosing the second auxiliary display portion 60, the display portions 56 anl 60 being arranged in planes parallel to each other and to the main display portion 52 and being connected to the base portion 10 in planes spaced transversely of the base portion. With this construction, matter depicted on the display portions 52, 56 and 60 may be caused to give the optical impression of being seen in perspective, so that such matter may be presented in a very attractive manner and made more striking in appearance, and therefore more likely to attract attention than if the matter were depicted on a fiat surface,
The manner in which the connecting parts 42 and 50 operate to draw the leaves 40 and 48 of the auxiliary display portions 56 and 60 respectively, into the planes of the leaves 12 upon movement of the device to collapsed position is clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, from which it appears that the movement of the leaves 12 from the positions shown in Fig. 3 to the positions shown in Fig. 4has caused the leaves 40 and 48 to approach closely to the planes of the leaves 12 and that upon th completion of the movement of the leaves 12 toward each other, the leaves 40 and 48 and the connecting parts 42 and 50 will have been drawn fully into the openings 54 of the leaves 12 so that all of the parts will lie within the planes of the leaves 12. Accordingly, the device when in collapsed position will be in the form of a perfectly fiat article, thus enabling it to be handled and shipped with great convenience and economy of space, and Without requiring the exercise of care to prevent in ury or breakage of the device.

Whether the device is made from a single blank or from several sheets of material, the contacting surfaces of the base portion 10 are firmly secured together, as, for example, by glue or other suitablevadhesive.

Consequently, when the leaves 12 are swung back'to display position, the display portions 52, 58 and 60 are substantially square in contour. It is recognized, however, that the contour of the leaves 12 and hence of the main display portion 52 may vary widely without departing from the scope of the invention, and that the contour of the leaves 40 and 48 in any device W may differ from that of the leaves12 or from each other. Moreover, it will be understood that instead of two auxiliary display portions 56 and 60, a single auxiliary display portion or more than two auxiliary display portions may be provided .as desired.
In the form of the device shown in Figs.
6 to 10 inclusive, the contour of the main display portion of the device is generally circular. Accordingly, the outer edges of the leaves of the main display portion are of substantially circular contour except at their lower ends where they areflattened out to provide substantially straight lower edges 71. The leaves 70 are supported on a base portion 72 similar to the base portion 10 of the form of the device hereinbefore described. As'shown, the sheets of material from which the leaves 70 and the base portion 72 are formed are creased along the lines 74 so as to enable the leaves 70 to be moved pivotally toward and from each other upon the base portion 72. The leaves 70 are out along quadrant lines 76 substantially parallel to their outer edges, the lines of cut 76 being extended as indicated at 78 and .80 (Fig. 9) into. the base portion 72, thus providing leaves 81 adapted to form an auxiliary display portion. .As shown, the leaves 81 are creased at 82 with respect to The width of the connecting parts 84 is substant-ially equal to the extent of projection of the leaves 81 into the base portion 72 beyond the Divot line 74 of the leaves 70. Accordingly, when the leaves 70. are swung into display position, as shown in Fig. 8, the leaves 81 are moved into" a plane rearwardly of and substantially parallel to the plane of the leaves 70, the connecting parts 84 being positioned at right angles to the planes of the leaves 70 and 81; whereas when theleaves 70 are moved toward collapsed position, as indicated in'Fig. 10, the leaves 81 and the connecting parts 84 are drawn into the planes of the leaves 70.
The form of the device shown in Figs. 11 to 14 inclusive, is similar to that shown in Figs'6 to 10 inclusive, except that the leaves 70 are out along substantially semi-circular lines 88 instead of along substantially quadrantal lines 76, as shown in Fig. 6. The severance of the leaves 70 along the lines 88 leaves no'part of the blank connecting the leaves 81 with the leaves 70. Accordingly, in this form of the device the leaves 81 and 70 are connected by parts 90 separate from the blanks from which the main body of the device is formed. The connecting parts 90 may be secured to the leaves 81 and- 70 in any convenient manner as by a suitable adhesive. As shown, the connecting parts 90 are preferably creased at their points of e connection to the leaves 81 and 70 so that the device may be collapsed into a flat position as shown in Fig. 14.
Having fully disclosed my invention, what is claimed is:
I claim:
Y 1. A collapsible display device comprising a main display portion and auxiliary display portions disposed rearwardly of the main display portion in planes spaced from each other when the device is in display position, each of said auxiliary display por-' tions being arranged in register with an opening in the adjacent display portion on the front side of said auxiliary portion, and means causing the auxiliary display portions to enter the respective openings when the device is collapsed.
2. A collapsible display device comprising a base portion, a main display portion and auxiliary display portions disposed rearwardly of the main display portion in planes spaced from each other, each of said play portion and partly from said base portion and said auxiliary display portions being adapted to enter said openings when the main display portion is moved to collapsed position.

A collapsible display device comprising a base, a main display panel hingedly connected to said base and movable to an angular display position with respect thereto, an auxiliary display panel also hingedly connected to said base, and a flexible connection between the main and auxiliary display panels whereby the latter is automatically caused to assume a position in spaced parallel relation tothe main panel when said main panel is moved to display position with relation to said base.
a. A collapsible display device comprising a base, a main display panel hingedly connected to said base and movable to an angular display position with respect thereto, said main panel having an opening therein extending into the base, and an auxiliary display panel hingedly connected at one of its ends to the base at one end of said opening and having .an angularly movable portion flexibly connecting said auxiliary panel to the main panel at the other end of said opening, whereby said auxiliary panel is caused toassume a position in spaced parallel relation to the main panel when the later is moved to its display position, said auxiliary panel automatically assuming a position within said opening in the plane of the main display panel when the device is collapsed.

A display device comprising a base, a main panel hingedly connected to said base for movement to an angular display position with respect thereto, flexibly connected auxiliary panels each hingedly connected to the base, and means connecting the several panels with each other whereby the same are caused to assume positions in spaced parallel relation to each other when the device is arranged in display position and are caused to automaticallyfold and assume positions in a common plane with said base when the device is collapsed.

A display device comprising a base portion, a main display portion comprising leaves pivoted to the base portion for movement toward and from each other between folded and display positions, an auxiliary display portion comprising leaves pivoted to the base portion rearwardly of the lineof pivot of the first-mentioned leaves, and connections between the leaves of said main and auxiliary display port1ons operable upon movement of the first-mentioned leaves toward and from each other to move the leaves of the auxiliary display portion into and out of the planes of the leaves of the main display portion.

A display device comprisinga base portion, a main display portion comprising leaves pivoted to the base portion and formed with openings communicating with each other in the line of pivot of said leaves, an auxiliary display portion comprising leaves pivoted to said base portion rearwardly of the line of pivot of said firstmentioned leaves, and connections between the leaves of the main and auxiliary display portions operable upon movement of the leaves of the main display portion toward each other to move the leaves of the auxiliary portion into the planes of the leaves of the main display portion within said openings, and further operable upon movement of the leaves of the main display portion away from each other into display position and to move the leaves of the auxiliary display portion into a plane spaced rearwardly from the main display portion.

A. display device comprising a base portion, display portions comprising leaves pivoted to the base portion in planes spaced from each other transversely of the base portion, each of said leaves, except those of the rearmost display portion, being provided with openings adapted to receive the corresponding leaf of the adjacent display portion on the side toward the rear of the base portion, and connections between the display portions constructed to move the corresponding leaves of the auxiliary display portions into the planes of the leaves of the main display portion upon movement of the device to collapsed position, and to move the auxiliary display portions into spaced relation rearwardly of the main display portion upon movement of the leaves of the main display portion away from each other into display position.

A display device having amain dis play portion c0mprising leaves foldable against each other and formed w th communicating openings and an auxiliary display portion comprising leaves adapted to be received in said openings when the leaves of the main display portion are folded together, said device being constructed and arranged to cause the auxiliary display portion to be moved into a plane rearwardly of the plane of the main display portion upon movement of the leaves of the main d splay port-ion away from each other into display position.
