In certain of its aspects the present invention is an improvement in vthe articles or structures forming the subjectmatter of my application 1,5; Serial No. 50,685, filed November 20, 1935.
An object: of the invention is to provide an article of the class .described, which is adapted to be supplied in a compact, flat form, preferably as a single piece or unit, and which can be read- 29 ily erected to form a three-dimensional display, card or toy without requiring any special skill or additional -materials and without requiring any substantial expenditure of time or; effort.
A further object of the invention is to provide a' device of the class described which is adapted to be supplied in'a compact, flat formfor shipment or storage, preferably as a single piece or unit; inwhich a maximum sculptural effect is secured when the device is erected, without requiringany 3 substantial expenditure of time or effort in erecte ing the device. Other objects of the invention are to provide a device of the class'described whichis simple and cheap tojmanufacture, and
to provide a device of the class described which 1}? is adapted to be made; from a sing1e,-flat sheet of stifi paper or other stifi' sheet material yieldingly providing resistance to bending. Additional objects of the invention are to provide devices of the class described in which the printing re- 40. quired for the pictorial representations included in the device may be accomplished on one side of a single flat sheet of material, such as stiff paper; and to providemeans whereby the erection of the device into a three-dimensionalform as and for collapsing the device intoa substantially two-dimensional flat formmay be readily accomplished. Referring to the-embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to '7 for purposes of illustration, the device consistsof a body 'member I and wing members 2 and 3hingedlyiconnected at joints 5 and 6,'rew spectively-,'to the tbodymember at opposite sides thereof andadaptedto overlap when folded in operative form. The body and wing members are formed by scoring and creasing or folding a single sheet of stiff, resilient sheet material of suitable "thickness (such as stiff paper, bristol 9 board or other suitablematerialherein referred to) that has been stamped or cut as shown in Fig. '7, to provide elements hereinafter referred to, as well as a contour in aocordance'with the representation desired. Further, the distance between the notch I and joint or fold 5 is less than the distance between the slot 8 and the joint or fold 6, so that when the notch I is locked over the body member at the edge II of the slot 8, the body member I is held bent in three-dimensional form. Preferably the body member I is formed of resilient material so that when in bent form it is under tension, but it is not essential that the device be constructed of resilient material. As will be evident to those skilled in the art, the body member I may be scored to bend into three-dimensional form without being under tension. Further, it is not essential that the device be locked in the erected or bent form, particularly in connection with its use as a toy.
For the purpose of providing additional threedimensional effect the wing member 3 is provided with a. slot-like Opening 24 and the wing member 2 is provided with a tab 25 adapted to fit into the opening 24 when in operative relation. The relation of the edge 26 of the wing 2 to the joint 01' fold 5 and the location of opening 24 with respect to the joint or fold 6 are such that when the body member I is bent into three-dimensional form and the distance between the folds 5 and 6 is hereby decreased, the wing member 2 is caused to bulge into a three-dimensional form by the shortening of the distance between the edge 26 and joint or fold 5 resulting therefrom. Preferably the tab 25 is of such dimensions that when inserted in the opening 24 it remains therein when the device is in the collapsed, flat form.
With a View to further enhancing the threedimensional efiect of the device, the wing member 2 is out along line 39, thereby providing an additional free element 40. As a result, when the wing member 2 is bent into three-dimensional form, the element 40 being free to move out of the plane of the device in the collapsed form, assumes a position spaced from the wing member 3.
An additional wing member 52 hingedly connected to the wing member 3 at the joint' I3'(and as shown in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7, formed by cutting the wing member 3 along the line 25) is provided to supplement the threedimensional effect of the device when erected and for other purposes, as will appear more fully hereinafter. The wing member I2 is cut away at its upper edge to provide a notch I4, and the wing member 2 is cut away at its lower edge to provide a notch 56. The location of the notches I4 and it with respect to the joints l4 and 5 are such that when the wings 2, 3 and I2 are folded over the body member I in overlapping relation and the device is in the collapsed or flat form, the wings 2 and i2 interlock within the notches I4 and I6. As a result, when the body member I is bent into three-dimensional form and the distance between the edges 5 and 6 of the body member is thereby shortened, the wing member I2 is caused to bend into a three-dimensional form by the pressure exerted by the wing member 2- through the notches I6 and I4.
The wing member I2 is further provided with a tab 33 adapted to be bent back along the line 3 i, thereby forming a flap rearwardly of the wing member i2 when in operative relation. Preferably wing member 2 is'provided with a projection 2 abutting the tab 32 when in operative relation, thereby providing a pocket for the insertion of matter to be dispensed, as for example, advertising matter shown as 35 in Fig. 1.
To further enhance the three-dimensional effect, additional wing members I8 and 33 are provided, respectively hinged to the body member I at the joints or folds I9 and 3d.
Wing member I8 is out along the line 2| to provide a free member 22. When assembled in operative relation, wing member I8 projects between the body member I and wing member 3, but the wing member 3 lies between the wing member I8 and free member. 22. .As a result, when the body member I is bent into three-dimensional form the joint I9 is moved away from the plane of wing member 3 and as a result member 22 is moved into three-dimensional angular relation to the wing member 3.
The Wing member 33 is provided with a tab 35, similar to the tab 25 on wing member 2; and wing member 3 is provided with an opening 36 adapted to receive the tab 35 when the wings are overlapped over the body member I in operative relation. As in the case of wing member 2, the distance between the edge 31 of the wing member. 33 and joint 34 and. the location of the slotlike opening 36 are such that the tab 35 lies within the opening 36, both when the device is in collapsed and in erected forms, and the wing member 33 assumes a'three-dimensional form, when the body member I is bent in three-dimensional form, due to decrease in distance between edge 31 and joint 34.
In assembling the device shown in blank or development in Fig. 7 into operative relation, the wing member 3 is folded over the body member and the tab 9 is inserted in the slot 8. The wing I8 is then bent over the body member I, so as to lie between the body member I and wing member 3, the wing member 3 lying between wing member I 8 and element 22. Wing member 2 is then folded over wing member 3 and under wing member I2, and tab 25 is inserted in the opening 24. The tab 30 is folded back so as to he between projection 32 and wing member I 2, and the notches I4 and I6 are then interengaged. Wing member 33 is then folded to overlap wing member I2 and tab 35 is inserted in opening 36.
In erecting the device for use, the body member I is flexed or bent, as by applying pressure simultaneously at the edges 5 and 6, to cause tab 9' to slide within the slot 6 at least to the point whereshoulder I9 projects beyond the slot 8, whereby the body member I fits within the notch I and is locked thereby in bent form.
To facilitate opening and closing of the device the body member I is provided with one or more openings adapted to receive a finger or fingers of the operator using the device.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention. as shown in Fig. 4, the body member is formed with a single opening 4! located at a distance from the slot 8 and in the direction opposite to the edge of the tab 9 in which the notch "I is located. Thus, with the notch I located on the lower edge of the tab 9, as shown in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to '7, the opening 4! is located above-thelevel of the edge I I of the slot 8. As a result of this arrangement, when the tab 9 is grasped with one hand by the operator and a finger of the other hand is inserted in the opening and the tab 9 is pulled in a direction out of the slot 8, the force exerted is in the direction of line AA of Fig. 4, with the result that the tab 9 is forced downward. Consequently, when the notch "I is reached, the tab 9 is forced downward over the body member at the edge II and the body member is locked in bent position.

For the purpose of facilitating the collapse or closing of the device into flat form, an opening 42 is similarlyprovided in the body member I. Since the desired result is an application of force in the direction of line BB of Fig. 4, thereby tending to lift the notch I out of engagement with the body member at the point I I, the opening 42 is located below the level of the edge II. In collapsing the device, the tab 9 is grasped by one hand, a finger of the other hand of the operator is inserted in opening 42 and the tab is pulled until the notch I is freed from engagement with the body member at the point II and the device is then permitted to collapse. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the body member I is formed of resilient stiff material providing sufficient tension to cause the body member to tend toassume the relatively two-dimensional, flat position.
It will be observed that, by reason of the cut 39 and the stiffness of the material, the portion 40 of the wing member 2 does not bend when Wing member 2 is bent or arched, but remains straight, thereby providing an element of the erected device in a plane spaced from the wing member 3. Further, the cooperating action of the wings 2, 3, I2 and 33 causes the wings 2,, I2 and 33 to bend or arch into three-dimensional form upon bending of the body member I into a three-dimensional form. By having the distance between-the edge 26 and joint or fold different from the distance between the edge 31 and joint or fold 34 (and corresponding different spacing of the openings 24v and 36 relative to the joint or. fold 6) the spacing of the wings 2 and 33 relative to the wing 3, and the shape assumed by said wings when the device is erected into three-dimensional, form, are different, thereby further enhancing the three-dimensional effect. It will also be noted that the positions assumed by thewing members upon erection of the device are predetermined and automatically as v sumed by reason of the construction. ' desired In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the body member I forms the background for the Wing members and is preferably concealed by said wing members when pictorial representations, greeting, advertising matthe necessary printing and color work can be applied to only one side of the blank, thereby greatly reducing the cost of the article.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 8 and 9 similarly includes the structural features described in connection with the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 7. Thus it consists of a body member WI and wing members I02 and I03 hingedly connected at joints I05 and I06, respectively, to the body member at opposite sides thereof and adapted to overlap when folded in operative relation, which are formed by the scoring and creasing or folding a single sheet of stiff, resilient sheet material of suitable thickness that has been stamped or cut as shown in Fig. 9. The body member IOI is provided with an opening W8, and wing member I03 is provided with a tab I09 adapted to fit within the opening I08 and has a notch I01 formed therein for cooperating with the body member at the end III of the opening I00. Preferably the tab I09 is of such proportions that when the device is in assembled relation the tab I09 lies within the opening I08, both when the device is in collapsed and in the erected forms.
For the purpose of providing additional threedimensional effect, the wing member I03 is provided with a slot-like opening I24, and the wing member I02 is provided with a tab I25 adapted to fit into the opening I24 when inoperative relation. Preferably the tab I25 is of such dimensions that when inserted in the opening I24 it remains therein when the device is in the collapsed, flat form.
As in the case of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to '7, the dimensions of the wing members I02 and I03 and the location of the openings I08 and I24, notch I0! and tab I25 are such that the body member I0! is held bent in three-dimensional form by the locking of the notch I01 over the body member at the edge II I of the I the wing member I02 is bent into three-dimen sional form.
vWith a view to increasing the sculptural ef feet, the device is provided with add tional wing members I33 and I53 which, are provided with tabs I35 and I55 adapted to be inserted, respectively,-in the openings I36 and I56, formed in the wing member I03. Further, a wing member I it formed on the body member and adapted to lie within the cut-out portion I23 of the wing member I03 is provided. Increased sculptural effect is secured, according to a feature of the present invention, by cutting an opening or slot I38 in the wing member I02 to receive the wing H8. Similarly to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and '7, the bodymember I0I is provided with openings MI and I42 for facilitating erection'and collapsing of the device.
The invention is not limited to the details of construction and the features hereinabcve described in connection with the specific embod ments shown in Figs. 1 to 9. While it is advantageous from the standpoint of cheapness, ease.
that the body member and one or more of the Wing members may be formed of separate pieces of sheet material and suitably jointed to provide hinged wing members. It will be further noted that only the body member and the wing members which bend need be formed of resilient stiff material. The latter form of construction (jointed separate pieces) is preferably employed when making the article from material which does not hinge readily when folded.
It is further to be noted, while a device having all of the advantageous features of the embodiments shown in Figs. 1 to 9 represents a preferred form of the invention, the invention is capable of embodiment in forms omitting one or more of said features.
Obviously, additional wing members may be hinged to the body member and/or the wing members. The advantageous three-dimensional effect secured by having the wing H8 project through an opening in the wing member 138 also may be secured or supplemented by other wing members carried by the body member or carried by other wing members, projecting through openings formed in other wing members. Further, the angles assumed by the wing members may vary. It is noted, however, that the wing member 3 in the erected position takes the position of a cord of a circle with respect to an are formed by the arched body member.
It will be understood that the invention is not lim'ted to any particular arrangement or size of the various members with respect to each other. Thus, the slot and shoulder locking means shown at 8 and H] in the drawings may be placed on the opposite side by reversing the location of the wing members 2 and 3.
Instead of holding the body member I is bent form by means of the interlocking action of shoulder ii] of tab 9 and slot 8, the device may be locked in bent form by other means; for example, in the manner shown in my application Ser. No. 50,685. It is noted locking means provided by tab adds to the pictorial and three-dimensional effect as well as serving as a locking member.
The devices of the present invention can be employed for a number of useful purposes. Thus, they can be employed as advertising displays, place cards, greeting cards, childrens toys and other amusement devices, for commercial, educational and decorative purposes, etc. Inasmuch as they may be supplied to the user in the form of a single unit which can be readily erected to form a pleasing three-dimensional structure without requiring assembling of separate parts, intricate instructions to the user, skill in assembling, or additional material, they are admirably suited for such purposes.
They also present numerous advantages from the standpoint of their manufacture; for example, they can be produced from a single sheet of material merely by cutting and/or stamping and folding, thereby avoiding assembling of separate parts; although as above noted, if desired, they can be made from separate sections of sheet material suitably joined to form a hinged structure of the type herein described.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my application Serial No. 50,685, filed November 20, 1935.
I claim:
1. An article of the character described comprising a normally fiat body member adapted to be bent into a three-dimensional form, wing members overlapping the body member, one of said wing members being hingedly connected near one of its edges to the body member and being interconnected near another of its edges with another of said wing members to cause a portion of the first mentioned wing member intermediate said edges to move into a three-dimensional form when the body member is bent into threedimensional form.
2. An article of the character described comprising a normally flat body member adapted to be bent into a three-dimensional form, Wing members overlapping the body member, one of said wing members being hingedly connected near one of its edges to the body member and being interconnected near another of its edges with another of said wing members to cause a portion of the first mentioned wing member intermediate said edges to move into three-dimensional relation to said other wing member when the body member is bent into three-dimensional form.
3. An article of the character described comprising a normally fiat body member formed of resilient, stiff material, adapted to be bent into a three-dimensional form, wing members overlapping the body member, one of said wing members being hingedly connected near one of its edges to the body member and being interconnected near another of its edges with another of said wing members to cause a portion of the first mentioned wing member intermediate said edges to bulge away from said body member when the body member is bent into three-dimensional form.
4. An article of the character described comprising a normally fiat body member, formed of stiff sheet material, adapted to be bent into threedimensional form, a plurality of wing members overlapping the body member, one of said wing members having means for engaging the body member for holding the body member in bent form, another wing member hingedly connected to the body member and having engagement with said first mentioned wing member to cause a portion of the second mentioned wing member intermediate its edges to move into a threedimensional form when the body member is bent into three-dimensional form.
5. An article of the character described comprising a normally fiat body member adapted to be bent into a three-dimensional form, a wing member overlapping the body member and hingedly connected near one of its edges to the body member, and means near another of the edges of said wing member for causing a portion of said Wing member intermediate its edges to move into a three-dimensional form when the body member bends into three-dimensional form, said means including a connection for causing said edges of the wing member to move toward each other as a result of bending of the body member into three-dimensional form.

An article of the character described comprising a body member formed of stiff sheet material adapted to be bent into a three-dimensional form and having an opening therein, a wing member hingedly connected to said body member and having a tab normally lying in said opening and extending through said opening whensaid body member is bent, means on said tab for engaging the body member when in bent her, and another of said openings being below said level.'
