IRONING BOARD.

Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 553,798.

The present invention relates to ironing boards and has for its principal ob ect to provide a novel construction of a device of I this nature which is constructed of a plurality of foldable sections so that when knocked down the parts will occupy a minimum amount of space so that the same can be put in a secluded place until it is again desired to use the same.

Another important object of the invention is to generally improve upon ironing boards of this character by providing a device which will be extremely simple and eftlcient in construction, reliable in operation, capable of being manufactured at'a coinparatively low cost, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

With the above and numerous other objects in view, theinvention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the ironing board proper which has fixed to its under surface adjacent one end a block 2. A pair of legs 3 are pivoted to the block 2 by means of the screws 4 or other suitable devices. These legs 3 are notched at their upper ends so as to overhang the top of the table 5 or any other suitable horizontal support while the 40 ironing board 1 has the adjacent edge underlying the same. A cross piece 6 is connected to the legs 3 intermediate their ends and a spring 7 connects this cross piece 6 with the ironing board 1 between its free end and the block 2 so as to hold the parts in clamped relation with the edge of the table 5'. a

An auxiliary pair of legs 8 is provided and carried by said legs are the trunnions 9 which pass through and operate in the slots 10 provided in the legs 3 adjacent and below the cross piece 6. A cross piece 11 is connected to the auxiliary legs 8 and is adapted to abut the crosspiece 6 when the legs 8 are in an operative position as is shown in Figure 1. \Vhen the parts are in a folded position the members 9 are slid 1n the slots 10 so as to be situated adjacent their upper ends and the auxiliary legs extend parallel and in between the main legs 3 while the ironing board 1 is pivoted so as to be also situated therebetween and rest on the auxiliary legs 8. By providing the slots 10 a more compact structure can be had than would be the case were stationary pivot pointsprovided because otherwise the ends of the auxiliary legs 8 would extend beyond the ends of the main legs 3.

Having thus described my invention,

what I claim as new is:

In combination,an ironing board. adapt ed to engage the under surface of a sup port, a transverse bearing block secured to the under surface of the ironing board adjacent one end thereof, supporting legs engaging the end faces of said bearing block and being pivotally connected thereto and adapted to engage the upper surface of the support, a cross piece connecting said legs intermediate their ends, said legs being formed adjacent the cross piece with longitudinally extending slots, a pair of auxiliary legs, trunnions extending transversely from the auxiliary legs and operating in the said slots, and spring means connected to the said cross piece-and the ironing board between its free ends and the bearing block whereby to hold the said supporting legs and ironing board in clamping engagement with the support.
