E. A. MAY
DRAFTING TABLE Oct. 27 1931.
Filed Nov. 28, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet l lllllll Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD A. MAY, 0F SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO TECHNICAL SUPPLY COMPANY, OF SCRANT'ON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY DRAFTIN G TABLE Application filed November 28, 1930. Serial No. 498,860.
v This invention relates to new and useful improvements in drafting tables.
Among the several objects of the invention are to provide a top including a drafting board which is normally disposed in a horizontal plane but which is adapted to be swung forwardly in a manner to elevate the rear end and lower the front end and to retain said board in said inclined position; to provide means for retaining the board at a predetermined inclination between the limits of'its movement; to provide such a top with spaced compartments open at the front and separated by an intermediate wall, a permanent closure or board for one of the compartments, and theadjustable drafting board for the other compartment; and to provide such a table of comparatively few parts and which is therefore simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, vthe nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a drafting table constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view showing in full line the normal position of the drawing board and in dotted lines the operative or adjusted position thereof,
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the table to Figure 4 is a top plan view of the top, parts being shown in section,
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical section of the table top showing a modified form of my invention,
Figure 6 is a front elevation thereof, and
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional view.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures'of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, my invention comprises a drafting table which includes a top A. and a supporting structure B therefor, the latter including a plurality of legs 5.
The top A comprises spaced side walls 6 and 7, an intermediate wall 8, a rear wall 9, and a bottom 10, forming resultant compartments C and D which are open at the front. The right hand compartment C is permanently closed at its top by a board 11 which rests upon and is secured to the upper edges of the side wall 7 and rear wall 9, and which partially rests upon the upper edge of the intermediate wall 8. The board may be provided with an ink bottle receiving opening 12 if desired. The left hand compartment D is normally closed by a drafting board 13 which rests upon the upper edges of the side wall 6, rear wall 9 and partially upon the upper edge of the intermediate wall 8. This drafting board is connected to the side wall 6 and intermediate wall 8 by two pairs of front and rear links 14 and 15, the pivots between the front links and the board 13 being indicated at 16, 16, and'the pivots between the front links and the walls 6 and 8 being indicated at 17, 17. The pivots between the rear links 15 and the board 13 being indicated at 18, 18 and the pivots between the rear links and the walls 6 and 8 being indicated at 19, 19. The rear links 15 are longer than the front links, and in the normal or horizontal position of the board 13 the links extend forwardly and downwardly from their pivots 16 and 18 to their pivots 17 and 19.
In the modified form shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, angle bars 20, 20 are secured to the under face of the board 13, and metal supporting bars 21, 21 are secured to the inner faces of the vertical walls 6 and 8 and extend longitudinally thereof. Each pair of front and rear links 1 1 and 15 are pivotally connected at their upper ends to an angle bar 20 and are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the adjacent supporting bar 21. A rearwardly extending arcuate link 22 is pivotally connected at its front end as at 23 to one of the rear links 15. The link is provided with an elongated slot 24, and aclamping bolt 25 extends through an opening in the side wall 6 and through said slot. The
porting bars 21' the llnks are firmly supelevated and the front vend thereof will bev lowered into contact with the upper front corner of the adjacent leg and the upper front corner of the intermediate wall ,7: Itv
will be noted that the links have been swung upwardly and forwardly past the vertical planes containing the pivotal connections 17 and 19 between the links and the walls and therefore the board 13 willremain in itsoperative or' inclined position until positively swung rearwardly. By means of the supported, and by means of the slotted link 22 and the clamping bolt 25 the board may be retained at any predetermined inclination betweenthe limits of its movements It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangements of parts may be variously changed and modifiediwithout departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim 1."-In,a drafting table, the combination with a top-including spaced vertical walls, a drafting board movably supported on said walls, and link connections between the walls and board whereby the latter may be swung forwardly at an inclination to rest against the front of the top and to be retained at said inclination, said link connections including a pair of front and rear links c'onnecting the board and each wall, the rear links being longer than the front links' and normally extending forwardly from their pivotal connections with the board, and all of the links being swingab'le upwardly and backwardly past the vertical planes containing the pivotal connections between the'links and the walls." v
