BED WITH RESILTENT SUPPORT FOR SPRING FRAMES.
Application filed June 11, 1925. Serial No.` 36,337.
This invention relates to a bed structure, and particularly to such a structure in which the bed frame carries an` auxiliary spring support for the bed spring frame. The present invention is an improvement upon that disclosed and claimed incur prior application, S. N. 742,808, filed October 19, 1924.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and efficient structure carried in the member extending between the side rails of the bed for resiliently supporting a bed spring frame.
It is more specifically an object of the in vention to provide a bar, preferably an angle bar, spanning the side rails of the. bed frame, which bar has a longitudinally eX- tending recess cut therein preferably in a horizontally disposed flange thereof, one or more springs being disposed at each end of said recess having one end secured to the said bar at the ends of said recess, together with a bed spring frame supporting bracket disposed in said recess having the other ends of said springs secured to the opposite sides thereof.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention Will be fully setl forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of one corner of a bed frame embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, a bed frame of common construction is disclosed cour prising the end member 4f having an inwardly projecting lug la in which is detachably carried one end of the side rail 5 of the bed frame, which side rail extends between the tWo end members of the bed frame, it being understood, of course, that there is a side rail 5 at each side of the bed fra-me. A bar 6 is provided adapted to entend between the side rails 5 adjacent one end of the bed and While the said bar may be variously formed, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated the same is shown as an angle 'bar having a horizontally disposed liange 6a. The vertical flange of said bar 6 is cutaway adjacent one end and an adjustable extension plate 'Y is secured to the horizontal flange by a headed and nutted bolt 8 extending through said plate 7 and through an elongated slot 6d in the horizontal flange 6a. The horizontal flange 6a is also cut away adjacent the end of bar 6 to form a longitudinally extending recess in said flange.l A smaller angle bar 6b is bolt ed to the outer side ofthe vertical flange of bar 6 to reinforce the saine. A pair of springs 9 shown as coiled tensile springs, are disposed adjacent each end of said recess and have one of their ends secured in apertures 6c formed in the bar at each end of said recess. A bracket 10 is provided which forms the supporting bracket for a bed spring frame, Which bed spring frame comprises spaced rods 1l shown as tubularl in form secured in the brackets l0, said brackets being secured at their ends to bars 12 extending transversely of the bed parallel to bar 6, said bars 12 being illustrated as angle bars. rlhe bracket 10 has a flat face fitting against the end side of the vertical flange of the angle bar 12 and has a pin 10a extending through an aperture in said' bar and is further secured to said bar by a head ed and nutted bolt 13. A multiplicity of tensile coiled springs ll are secured in spaced relation to the horizontal flange of bar 12 to Which springs the spring fabric of the bed spring frame is connected. The bracket l() has a flange 10b projecting at each side at its bottom part, said fianges being disposed substantially in theplane of the horizontal flange 6*L and having secured thereto the adjacent ends of springs 9. i
From the above description it is seen that the bed spring frame is supported by brackets 10 which are, in turn, supported by the springs 9 and the bar 6. There will, of course, be a bracket 10 adjacent each end of bar 6 and there Will be one of the bars 6 adjacent each end of the bed. A simple and efficient auxiliary resilient support is thus provided for the bed spring frame, the spring 9 resiliently supporting the brackets 10 and acting to hold the same in proper position. The springs 9 are conveniently secured to the bar 6 and conveniently disposed in the recess formed in said bar. An extremely simple and efficient structure is thus provided. The plate 7 can be adjusted as desired so that the bar 6 can be `used With v o a bar spanning said members diliierent Widths of bed frames. The structure `is easily and inexpensively produced and the same has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and eliicient, and is being commercially made.
It Will, of course, be understood, that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts Without departing from the scope ot' applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable ot carrying out the objects above set forth, in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with the longitudinally extending spaced members of a bed frame, of a bar spanning said members and supported thereby, said bar having a recess formed therein, a spring at each end of said recess and having oneend secured to said bar at said end, and a bed spring frame having av supporting member disposed between and supported by said springs.
2. The combination with the longitudinally extending spaced members oi a bed iframe,
and supported thereby, said bar having a recess formed therein., a spring at each end ot said recess and having. one end secured to said bar at said end, and a bed spring frame having a supporting bracket secured thereto, said bracket having respectively secured at opposite sides thereof the other ends of said springs.
3. The combination with the longitudinally extending spaced members of a bed frame,
ot' a bar spanning said members and supported thereby, said bar having a recess formed therein, a bed spring frame supporting bracket disposed in. said recess, and resilient supporting means for said bracket secured to said bar and disposed in said recess.
l. The combination with the longitudinally extending spaced members ot' a bed frame, of an angle bar spanning said members and having a substantially horizontally disposed flange cut away to form a recess extending longitudinally of said bar, a pair of coil springs at each end of said recess and secured at one of their ends to said bar at the end oi" said recess, a supporting bracket of a bedl spring frame having flanges at each side respectively secured to the other ends of said pairs oi' springs and supported thereby.
5. i bar adapted to span the longitudinal side members of a bed frame lorined with eut-out rectangular portions adjacent its ends, springs running longitudinaliy orp said cut-out portions having one of their ends attached to said bar and a bracket holding a bed spring frame fitting Within said cut-out portions, the other ends of said springs being connected to said bracket.
6. A bar adapted to span the spaced longitudinal side members of a bed trame and having a recess therein and resi-lient means extending substantially parallel to said bar across said recessv and connected' to said bar i'or supporting one of the side rails oit' a bed spring frame.
In testimony `whereof We aliix our signatures.
