This invention relates 'toquilting frames and has for its object the provision of a frame of simple construction which may be easily adiusted to blocks of desired dimen-- whereby to clamp the brackets and i the bars The opening 9 is fl i 1 of; the bolt 10 is corsions within definite limits, maybe readily foldedinto, compact form when not in use, will be securely held against collapse when arranged for use and which maybe freely and easily handled without thenser being apt to be injured'through contactlwith the fabric engaging and supporting hooks. The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawing and consists in certain novel. feae'd out'in the appended claim;
In the'drawing: l a: .Figure 1's a plan view of my improved frame showing it arranged for use; Fig. 2 is-a view showing part of the frame collapsed for storageor transporta-v tion;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of described and then more particularly pointof the frame bars by dotted lines: Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line 44 of Fig. 1-, and v Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail. The frame constructed according to my invention consists primarily of four bars 1 which are preferably of wood andare relatively narrow, each bar being provided in its end portions with longitudinal slots. 2. also employ corner brackets 8 which are adaptedto engage the respectivebars and maintain them in right-angular relation Whenthe frame is arranged for use. as shown in Fig. 1. Each of these brackets consists of a main web or'plate of rectangular outline provided, at one edge with a flange 4 and having a web 5 extending from its other parallel edge at a right angle to the main web or plate. The main plateof the bracket is of such width that the flange 4 and the web 5 will'fit snugly against the opposite sides of the frame bar 1 engaged therebyand from the free longitudinal edge of the web 5 a plate or web 6 extends out wardly therefrom at a right angle thereto or in .a plane parallel with the plane of'the main plate or web. This outwardly'projecting plate 6 is provided at itsopposite side edges with flanges 7 extending at right" angles to the sald plate 6 and in a dlrection away from the main plate or web. Openings 8 and 9 are formed centrally through tures which will be .hereinafterflrst fully j I: and the corneribra lower bar each bracket will bear againstthe op'ooag i st-whichthe bracketis placedwhile the corner brackets indicating the position 11 are turned homewill notches may bee and are,

end 10f which is fitted a winghutll to be i i respondingly shape'dso that rotationofthe.
bolt with respect to the brackets will be prevented. v
Upon reference to Figs. off-the drawing, it'will be readily seen that-in ar ranging the frame for-usethe frame bars are disposedv at rightangles" to each other ckets aredisposed across the respective bars.
being 'arrangedagainst the bottom-of the The flange 4 and" the ,web 5 of site sides of, the ,bar
the plate 6 of each bracket will project outwardly and rest against the adjacent side of the intersecting frame bar with the flanges"? bearing against the edges of said bar. Each bracket will thus have a rigid engagement with each bar so that the bars will be positively maintained in their proper relation and when the nuts together so that loosened or moved out of their tions while the frame is in use. 7
Inthe upper inner corner of each "frame notches or recesses 12 which are narrow and These 1111111- the corners of the bars.
kerfs across be provided in anydesired one being arranged up-.-, onthetop oftheupper bar and the other be securely clampedf, v they are not apt to become proper relaa, bar, transversely thereto,.I form aseriesof preferably arranged closer together at the ends of thebars than. in their Fig. 1. Within each kerf, notch-0r recess is 18 for engaging the fabric which is to be held en throughthe frame ba-r at the back of the secured a hook N0 in the frame; Asshown most clearly in Fig. I 14, these hooks comprise a 7 terminal straight vertical shank 14 which is adapted to be driv.-.
recess 12, the bill 15 of the hook being-0on g nected withthe' shank 14 by anintermediate angularly disposed stem 16 which is adapted to rest upon .the'base of the recess with the bend 17 connecting it with the shank 14 dis: no
posed within the recess below the upper surface of the frame bar. Thebill of thehook.
is thus disposed bet-weenthe' -planesofthe 1 I opposite faces oi the frame bar so performedin any manner 7 "venient or preferred by the user.
10 ence has indicated that; While the fabric may be easily engaged with the hooks, the liability of the users hand coming incontact with the be engaged with the hooks and the sewing which ismost con- Experithat the most advantageousway OZE GH'IPlOYlIlg, the frame is to engage andsew the'coviering 7 padd ng and the l ning Without engaging the the'flining of a quilt-'blockwith the hooks and then place the-padding upon fabric over and; to the edges of; the covering material with the 2 them by turning books. 7
This; however, is entirely optional withetheus'er. o
When the device is set up for use, it can be arranged to act upon quilt blocks of any de sired'siZe-bymerely shifting the bolts 10 along 'the respective slots Z and then securing the; Wing nuts 11 home.
\VheJn the frames not to be used, the bars are separatedl-sufiiciently to permit two bars "to be disposed in Fig. 2', and
alongside-each other, as, shown then secured V hook andbeing thereby injuredis removed. 1
' In use; the material to be acted upo'nlmay thelining other bar clamping V brackets and through the crossed -iral'ne bars,
and clamping nuts fitted upon the bolts and turnedhome against the adjacent brackets,
disposed against the. outer face of each crossed bar and each outer face of whlch it is secured V V in such position 7 d V b tightening the bolts 10 in an obvious manner; The device can, thus be'collapsed into very compact form so that it maybestored" or shipped Within a very small space. The frame of my nvention is very light and may be easily set aside temrmrarilywithout disturbing the Workif; it becomes necessary to stop the Work before it is finished. 7
Having thus described the invention I claim: 7 c
A quilting frame comprlslng frame bars,
each end portion of each bar crossing an end dortion of another bar, cooperating brackets each engaged with the outer face of a frame bar at the points Where said bar crosses anbolts fitted through said sides of said plate engaging: the sides oli'said opposed bar and terminating" short ot the outer; face thereo V In testimony WhereotI affix my signature.
