Description

Patented May 31, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
AUGUST W. KOEHN, 0F OSHKOSH, WISCONIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE DEABBORN (30Mi-v IANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 0F ILLINOIS.
CARD TABLE.
Application filed April 25, 1923. Serial No. 634,427.
The main object of this invention isy to provide a card table of improved construction.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a card table which has a frame. a top, and improved means for securing the top to the frame, and in which a cover is provided for the top and secured thereto by an improved method, the improved method by which the cover is secured to the top being particularly advantageous when lit is employed in connection with my improved means for securing the top to the frame of the table. A
Other objects of my invention will become apparent as the detail description progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, where1n Flg. 1 is a fragmentary' perspectlve view of ortions of the frame and top of a card tab e which embodies the novel features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a table, and
Fig. 3 is a sectiontaken on line 3-3 of Fi 2.v Igteferring to the drawin I prefer to disclose ,my invention .as em odied in a card table comprising a rectangular frame 10 to which is attached a plurality of legs 11.v Each of the legs 11 is pivotally secured to the frame 10 as at 12, 12, and is adapted to he swung into va position wherein it lies parallel and adjacent to one of a plurality of bars 13 Vwhich form the frame 10. A plurality of hinged membersA 14, each of which is pivotally secured to the frame 10 by a screw 15 and to one of the legs 11, by a similar screw, not shown, provide' means whereby the legs may be locked in supbottom plan view' of the card portin positions with respect to the frame 10. T e frame 10 is adapted to receive a top 17 of paper fiber, or similar material.,
The structure above described is well known in the art, my invention having to do with the manner in which a cover 18 is secured to the top 17, with means whereby the top 17 is secured tothe frame 10, and with certain features embodied in the frame itself;
`As shown in Figs. land 2, the 'cover 18, which may be of cloth, leatherette, or a similar material, is drawn tightly over the up-v per surface of the top '1 and also around l'-parent. of brads, tacks or thelike, to secure thev the edges of the top 17 so that'its marginal portlons may be glued or otherwise secured to the under surface of the top 17 as at 20. Each of the bars 13 is' provided with a shoulder 21, which shoulders 21 togetherserve to receive and support 'the marginal portions of the top 17 in a position relative totheframe 10 wherein the upper surfaceof the top is substantially flush Withj the upper -surface of the frame.
The means for securing the table top yto the frame 10 comprlses a plurality of straps 22. Each -of the straps 22 has its ends benti downwardly "as at 23 to lie adjacent the inner surface of one of the bars 13. Each bent end 23 of the straps 22 is secured to 'its associated bar 13 by means of a plurality of wood screws 24. It will be notedthat the straps 22 are diagonally arranged with respect tothe frame 10 so that each strap 22 1s secured to two 4adjacent bars 13 of the frame.
Each strap 22 is secured tothe to 17 by means of a plurality of rivets 25. he upper head 26 of each rivet 25l is concealed by cover'18 and is preferably provided with 'a' washer 27 against which the head 26 may bear. The washer 27 reinforces the material of which the top 17 is made. b
It will be readily understood that'in the assembly of the device the task of securing y the cover 18 to the top 17 and securing the top 17 to the frame 10 is accomplished with ease. The strap 22 is vfirst aiixed to the under surface of the top.` 17 by means of the rivets 25, the cover 18'being then drawn taut acrossthe upper surface of the to "and,
cover in place. The use of bra-ds o1 tacks to secure the cover to the top or to the frame in a manner which includes piercing the cover, will eventually permit the cover to wrinkle or fold,'as the walls 0fn the apertures thus formed in the cover will yield or tear.
The diagonal strapsfare advantageous in that they hold the corners of the top securely in place against the adjacent shoulders 2l, at the same time providing means whereby the intermediate portionof each margin ot' the top'is held against a shoulder 21, and also means for bracingthe frame.
Importance is attached to the fact that the braces 22 be of flat elongated form and that they extend across the corners of the top at a distance from the angles of the frame so as not to interfere with the folding of the'legs of the table. v
I am aware that changes in the form, construction and arrangement of'parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and Without sacriiicing-the advantages of the invention and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the following claim.
I claim: t A card table comprising a polygonal `iframe, the upper face of which is providedl with a surrounding shoulder, a, top of the shapeto conform to that `ot the iframe, a coverdrawn tightly over the lsurface of the top and around its edges and having the marginal edges thereof disposed upon the under side of the top, the marginal edges of said top being mounted on said shoulders,
flat elongated straps veach having down-- AUGUST WT KOEHN.
