Description
W. HDRBOBT'.
Sash-Fastener.
Ivaunted Feb. 9,1875
' messes Aorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OrruoEo WILLIAM HORBORT, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD HIS RIGHT TO J. E. G. BAROKHAN, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,678, dated February 9, 1875; application tiled December 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HoRBoRT, of Madison, in the county of Dane and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fastener; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa- U nyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference vmarked thereon, making a part of this specitication.
My invention relates to sash holders and fasteners; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a peculiar inclined box, ball, lever, and pivoted hook, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig'ure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a Window frame and sash with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an venlarged detached view of the sash holder and fastener in perspective.
A represents the window-frame, and B the lower sash therein. On the inner side of the window-frame A is secured a box, C, which is open at the rear, top, and bottom, and the front is inclined so as to bring its lower end closer to the sash B than the upper end. In the box O is placed a roller or ball, D, which wedges in between the sash and the inclined front of the box O, and thus will hold the sash at any desired height. The sash can be raised easily, as then the roller or ball will move up into the larger end of the box.
To lower the sash, the roller or ball D must rst be pushed upward, which is accomplished by means of a small curved lever, E, hinged or pivoted to an ear, a, projecting from the lower end of the inclined front of the box C. By pressing on the outer end of the lever E, its inner end will press the roller or ball D upward, andthe sash will descend.
For the purpose of locking the sash When down, a hook, G, is pivoted between two ears on a plate, b, fastened to the upper rail of the sash, and this hook falls down and catches over a flange, d, projecting from the upper end of the front ot the box O.
When the hook Gr is thus fastened, the sash cannot be opened from the outside.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the inclined box O, having ange cl, and containing the ball D, with the pivoted lever E, and the pivoted hook G, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this d day of December, 1874.
WILLIAM HORBORT.
