COMBINED ADVERTISING NOVELTY AND MATCH-BOX BETAINEB-.
Application filed April 24, 1925. Serial No. 25,672.
My invention has reference, in its broad aspect, to improvements in a combined advertising novelty and safety or retaining device for match boxes, and more particularly it is my-purpose to provide a simple and effective device of this character for preventing the match receptacle of a match box from becoming accidentally disengaged from its casing; said device comprising a head portion of any suitable shape or configuration for displaying advertising matter.
My box retaining device is also provided with improved means for preventing its disengagement from a match box casing, such 1 means including recesses the walls of which are adapted for locking engagement with a match box casing when my device is given a half turn. Furthermore, .it is my purpose to so construct a device of this character 2 that it may be manufactured and sold in large quantities at a very small cost thereby adapting it for use as an inexpensive advertising novelty like; the utility of the novelty preventing its 2 destruction or disposal by the person receiving it.
The structural elements and other means employed to accomplish the above and other equally important objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully described in detail and specifically pointed out in the claims appended hereunto and forming a part of this specification, but the scope of the invention may only be determined by the limits defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention V Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form 4 of my device,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of another form of my device, and,
Figure 3, is a stamped out retainer having an arrow head, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a match box equipped with my device.
In the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or similar parts throughout the several views;
The numeral (1) designates the head of my device which may be of any suitable form or configuratiom'as round, square, oblong, oval or the like. and centrally of which is carried a pin (2). Preferably the pin is integral with the head, and it may be cylinfor cigar stores and the drical or conical as in Figure 1, or flat or polygonal as in Figure 2, and has apiercing point 3 and opposed recesses (4:) adjacent the point of connection between the pin and the head. The pin is designed to be pressed through the material of the casing (5) of a match box, or other receptacle, midway the ends thereof, so that it will engage the ends of the retainer (6) to prevent the same from becoming accidentally disengaged. Furthermore by inserting the pin midway the ends of the match box casing the match receptacle may not be withdrawn more than half its length thereby positively retaining the matches therein irrespective of the disposition of the match box, although matches may be readily removed therefrom. In Figure 3.,
I have shown a stamped out retainer in which the pin is formed similar to an arrow (7), the barbs of which retain the same in the casing of the receptacle to which it is applied.
In practice my device is disposed angularly with respect to the axis of the match box, or other receptacle, and the pin pressed into the casing as shown in dotted lines at,(5 in Figure 4, whereupon the device is given a half turn in the direction of the arrow to cause the walls of recesses (4) to lock the device in place. Upon the head of the pin any suitable advertising mattermay be placed, and as an advertising novelty it will serve a useful purpose at a nominal cost. The head may also be stamped out in configurations suggestive of the type of business it is desired to advertise, as cigar shaped, oblong like a cigarette, with the outlines of an Indian or animal or the like.
While in the foregoing, there has been illustrated and described such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of the invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.
I claim 1. An article of manufacture for use in retaining slidable receptacles in their casings and as an advertising novelty, comprising a head adapted to be disposed on the casing of a receptacle, a pin on the head adapted to be inserted through the casing to engage the ends of a receptacle to prevent removal thereof, and said pin formed with opposed recesses adjacent the head adapted to form a catch operative upon a half turn ing indicia, and said post being arrow shaped of the pin to engage the material of the easto lock upon a half turn of the post against ing for preventing Withdrawal of the pin. the material of the casing of the box to pre- 2. An article of manufacture for use as Vent Withdrawal of the post. 5 a box retainer and advertising novelty, com- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature prising a head formed with a stamped out hereunto. post, said head adapted to receive advertis- JOSEPH P. \VOODS.
