EDWARD H. MAYO, OF MOSS POINT, MISSISSIPPI.
PAPER-ROLL PLUG.
Application filed April 15.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moss Point, in the county of Jackson, State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Paper-Roll Plug; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to paper roll plugs, and has for its object to provide a plug of this character which is round in vertical cross section and tapers towards its end, thereby forming a shoulder adapted to bite. into the wall of the chamber in the roll of paper, at a point spaced from its end thereby securely holding the plug in position against displacement and also to locate the shoulder adjacent one end of the plug.
A further object is to provide a paper roll plug having an annular ridge spaced from one of its ends and adapted to bite into the wall of the chamber of a roll of paper for securely holding the plug within the chamber.
VJith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure. 1 is a sectional view through one end of the roll of paper, showing the plug applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the plug.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates one end of a roll of paper and 2 the cylindrical chamber, which extends therethrough. Heavy rolls of paper are mounted on horizontally disposed shafts 3 for unwinding purposes in printing presses and the like, therefore it is necessary to pro- 1922. Serial No. 552,891.
vide plugs 4 having bearings 5 therein for the reception of the shaft 3. Heretofore, in plugs of this character, the plugs have not been securely held within the chamber 2 as they do not bite into. wall of the chamber 2. To overcome this difliculty the plugt is provided with an annular ridge 6 at its outer end 7,-said ridge 6 being formed by tapering the plug towards its end 7 and towards the end 8. When the small end 8 of the plug is forced into the outer end of the chamber 2, the ridge 6 presses inwardly on the wall of the chamber 2 and draws the paper to either side of the ridge 6 into engagement with the tapered portions 9 and 10. of the plug 4 as clearly shown in Figure 1. The plug is held in axial position within the chamber 2 and rigidly held against displacement during shipment and at the same time rigidly held for forming a bearing on the shaft 3.
From the above it will be seen that a roll paper plug is provided which is simple in construction and one which is rigidly held within the end of the chamber of the roll in engagement with the wall of the chamber thereby preventing the easy displacement or movement of the plug.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful isz- The combination with a paper roll'having a cylindrical chamber therein, of a plug adapted to be driven in one end of said chamber, said plug being provided with an annular ridge adjacent its outer end of greater diameter than the chamber, said plug tapering from the ridge towards its ends, said ridge being formed by the tapering of the plug towards its ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWVARD H. MAYO.
