DEVICE FOR EXTINGUISHING FIRES.

p This invention relates to a new and improved apparatus or tool for extingulshmg fires.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a new and improved device or tool for this purpose which shall be especially efiicient for extinguishing fires in large piles of coal, or various kinds of combustible material.
Another object of this invention is to devise a tool or device which shall be especially efficient for extinguishing fires produced by spontaneous combustion in large piles of soft coal, or other substances, such as raisin seeds, etc. 7
Other objects of this invention will'be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it beingunderstood that the above general statement of the objects of this invention is intended merely to generally explain thesame and not to limit it 1n any manner.

Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view It has been known for many years fires frequently occur by reason of spontaneous combustion in large piles of soft coal. Ordinary methods of extinguishing fires as, for example, by spraying water upon the outside of the pile of coal, are not efficient because the; fire usually starts in the interior of the pile of coal and ordinarily at or near the'bottom of the pile of coal.
According to this invention, a tool or device is provided which can be readily forced into the interior of the "pile of coal, at or near the bottom thereof, so .that the water can be applied in the most efficient npianner.
The improved tool or device comprises a tapered nozzle N provided withan external thread 10, and with perforations 11. The inner end of the nozzle N is preferably internally threaded and it is connected to the pipe 1 by means of the coupling 12, which can be of any suitable type. The pipes 1, 4:, 6, 7 and 9 are connected by the intermediate angular coupling members2, 3, 5 and 8,'which can be of any suitable type.
The last pipe 9 is preferably aligned with the first pipe 1 and the pipe 9 can be connected by an ordinary revoluble coupling to a flexible hose which is connected to any suitable source of water supply. v The parts of the device are made of any suitable metal. a

The nozzle N is open at the outer end thereof.
In order to use this improved tool or device, a recess is formed in the burning pile of coal at or near the bottom thereof, as, for
example, by shoveling away the coal or other material at this point to form a pocket. The nozzle N is forcibly thrust into this pocket or recess so that the top thereof be- 7 comes covered with the coal." Experience has shown that by simply turning the pipe 4 around; the common axis of the pipes 1 and 9, the threading 10 operates to force the nozzle N deeper into the pile of burning coal, with eat force. Hence,the nozzle is caused to e ectively penetrate the pile of coal at any desired point in which it is considered that the application of the water would be most efficient. I
' The water can squirt out of the nozzle N in all directions, through the openings shown in Fig; 2. The exterior threading 10 can have any desired pitch.
This invention is not restricted to the pipe construction shown in the embodiment.
It is desirable that the external threading I N should be of sufficient width to enable it to engage the pile of material to be acted upon so that the revolution of the said nozzle will cause it to be with considerable force. We claim a A fire extinguishing device comprising a nozzle having an external threading, said threading being of suificient width to enable said nozzle'to beself-propelling when it is turned while it is imbedded in a pile'of loose material, rigid pipe means directly and rigidly connected to said nozzle and rotatfed forwardly and.- g
