3 Claims. (01. 220-s5) The invention relates to devices for use by painters, paperhangers and the'l'ike for supporting 'a brush when the same is not in use.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated above comprising a brush holder adapted to be hingedly connected with apaint or paste bucket or-the like in such a manner that the brush holder rests on the top edge of the bucket, when the holder is arranged in working position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated above comprising a foot member permanently secured to the inside of the circumferential bucket wall, extending upwardly above the edge of the bucket wall and hingedly sustaining the brush holder.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated above where-' in the upper edge portion of the foot member and the lower edge portion of the brush holder are formed into cooperating spirally rolled hinge parts engaging each other so that the brush holder can be pivoted in relation to the foot member.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved brush holder whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanyin drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective, with a portion broken away, illustrating a brush holder embodying the invention and in applied position;

Figure 2 is a view in perspective showing the device with parts in a second position;

Figure 3 is an enlarged view in top plan of the assembly as shown in Figure l, a portion being broken away;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken radially through Figure 3, and

Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view, with portions in end elevation, of the hinge structure.

The device for supporting a paint or paste brush as herein embodied comprises a bucket II or a similar container adapted to be filled with .paint, paste or the like.

I A brush holder H is preferably also made from sheet metal and has bottom I4, two side walls I5 formed on opposite side edges of the bottom I4. and an end or foot wall IE extending at an approximately right angle from the bottom I4.

Preferably the foot wall I6 is provided with a plurality of perforations IT. The side walls I5 are slightly tilted or inclined outwardly and their inner edges are slightly spaced from the foot wall I6 as at I8.

The upper edge portion of the bottom I4 extends upwardly beyond the side walls and is rolled outwardly in spiral shape to form a second hinge part I9 adapted to cooperate with the first hinge part I3 and to connect the brush holder H hingedly with the foot member II.

The upper edge portions 20 of the side walls I 5 are rolled outwardly and downwardly. The dimensions of the brush holder H are such that its lower portion and the foot wall It are located inside the container Ill, when the holder is pivoted downwardly into brush supporting position, and the downwardly rolled edge portions 20 of the side walls I5 engage the upper edge of the container Ill and hold the holder in such position.

Coinciding circumferentially extending slots 2| and 22 are provided in and centrally of the length of the hinge parts I3 and I9 respectively anda retainer 23 is secured on the circumferential wall of the container l0 and extends slidably into the slots 2| and 22 permitting pivotal movement of the brush holder in relation to the foot member, but preventing axial displacement of the two hinge parts relative to each other.

The above description shows clearly, that a paint brush or the like can be conveniently placed into the brush holder H, when the same is in working position, so that the brush rests on its bristles on the foot wall l6, whereby paint or the like adhering to the brush may drip through the perforations I1 and the spaces IB into the container I0.

When the brush holder H is not in use it can be pivoted upwardly into idle position for the purpose of facilitating cleaning of said holder.

In addition a plurality of containers I0 equipped with brush holders H can be nested into each other for the purpose of storing or transporting them, when the brush holders of said containers are arranged in idle position.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described, including a container, a brush holder and a foot member permanently secured on the container, the upper edge portion of the foot member and the upper edge portion of the brush holder being formed into cooperating rolled hinge parts adapted to connect the brush holder hingedly with the foot member, said cooperating hinge parts being provided with coinciding circumferential slots and a stop rigidly secured to the container, projecting through said slots and permitting pivotal motion of the brush holder relative to the foot member, but preventing axial movement of the hinge parts relative to each other.

A device of the character described comprising a receptacle in the form of a pail, a metal plate secured to the inner face of the pail at the top thereof and projecting a substantial distance above the top of the pail, said plate having an outwardly rolled top edge portionforming one element of a hinge, a brush holder comprising.

a flat plate body having a top edge rolled to pro vide an element of a hinge, the said hinge elements being engaged one within the other whereby the last named plate may be swung in a vertical are from a position outside the receptacle to a position partly within the same, the last named plate having an overall width slightly less than the inside diameter of'the receptacle, a substantially right angularly extending foot wall integral with the bottom edge of the last named plate, said foot wall being apertured, and transversely arcuate side walls carried at the sides of the last named plate and extending laterally and forwardly, said side walls at their lower edges being spaced from the ends of the foot plate and said side walls being adapted to rest against the wall of the pail when the brush holder is in operative position within the pail.

3. A device of the character stated in claim 2, wherein said side walls have rolled outer edges for engagement over the top edge of the pail when the brush holder is in working position ELMARION S. DUNTON.
