G- E. MARVIN ET AL PLUG FOR ROLLS OF PAPER AND THE LIKE Filed May 31, 1924 v E EEK G ilbcrtE Marvin scph 'fli Patented Apr. 20, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLUG FOR ROLLS OF PAPER AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 31, 1924. Serial No. 717,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GILBERT E. MARVIN and JosEPH WIPFLI, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the village of Nekoosa, in the county of Wood and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plugs for Rolls ,of Paper and the like; and we'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 1
This invention relates to plugs for rolls of paper and the like intended more particularly for rolls of wrapping paper for counter use in stores.
Heretofore such rolls have been supplied with wooden plugs which are expensive,
liable to break and so forth.
It is an object, therefore, of the present invention to provide a cheap substantial, normally unbreakable plug for such purposes.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a paper roll having arranged in one end thereof a plug constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the plug.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2. I
I Figure 4 is a section on the line 44: of
Figure 3.
As shown on the drawings A roll of wrapping paper 5 has inserted in each end a plug 6 through the center of which passes a shaft 7 about which the roll 42 and its supporting plug may revolve as the paper is used.-
The plug is made from a single sheet of metal in a die press. The center portion 8 is produced by splitting or slitting the metal radially and expanding the intervening metal into cylindrical form. The conical portion 9 is not formed by drawing the metal so much as by folding it in order to reduce its circumference and these folds extend into the flange portion 10. The part 9 being conical may be forced into the opening at the end of the roll and held in that position by friction.
lVhen it is desired to use the roll the shaft 7 is slipped through the central openings in the plugs and roll is then in position for use.
We are aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction 5 may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this in vention, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention A plug for paper rolls and the like formed of a single metal sheet comprising a cylindrical portion formed from the central part of the sheet, a flange portion adapted to engage the end of the roll and an intermediate conical portion, said flange and conical portions being formed by folding the metal.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
GILBERT E. MARVIN. JOSEPH WIPFLI.
