Description

J. SYMONS.
00mm ROLL. APPLICATION FILED MAY 10, 1907.

@NKTED STATES PATENT @FlFllClE.
JOHN SYMONS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COUCH-ROLL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that '1, JOHN SYMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxborough, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Couch-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couch rolls to be used in paper making machines. These rolls are generally in the form of brass cylinders over which is applied a fabric jacket, the ends of which are gathered and tied at the ends of the roll cylinder. In the operation of these devices as heretofore constructed, the jackets must necessarily be renewed about every month, thereby entailing considerable lost time as the result of stopping the machines with a consequent loss to the manufacturer, this expense being in addition to the cost of the jackets.
My invention has for its objects to provide an improved form of roll with which the use of a jacket will be unnecessary, thus to avoid the above noted objections and expense, one which will be exceedingly durable and which will require no attention other than to be trued in a lathe about every six months.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a couch roll embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken centrally and longitudinally through the roll.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the roll embodies a central shaft or core 1 provided with a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinally extending splines or feathers 2 and having at points adjacent its ends threaded portions 3 for the reception of brass confining nuts 4 which bear at the outer faces of brass washers 5 in turn arranged to bear on the outer faces of end members or heads 6 made of any suitable material, but preferably composed of wood. The body of the roll is made up of a series Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1907.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 372,929.
of juxtaposed disks or washers 7 made of woolen fabric such as is now employed in the manufacture of the couch roll jackets above referred to, the washers or disks 7 being of circular form and provided with central openings to receive the shaft 1, it being understood that the openings in the washers are notched at opposite points to accommodate the keys or feathers 2 by means of which the washers are fixed against rotation on the core. After the woolen washers have been prepared and applied to the core 1, the end heads 6 are arranged in place and the roll subjected to pressure in the direction of its length for pressing the washers T'firmly against each other to render the roll sufficiently compact, the brass washers 5 being thereafter applied and the nuts l screwed onto the portions 3 for clamping the heads in place.
In the operation of the device, the use of jackets is wholly dispensed with, while at the same time a roll having a solid woolen surface is provided, thus to render the device efficient in action.
In order to prevent the washers from expanding, a plurality of clamping rods or bolts 8 is employed, of which there may be any desired number, which pass through the washers 5 and heads 6 and carry nuts 9 by which they are held in place.
What I claim is:
A couch roll comprising a core having threaded extremities and oppositely disposed longitudinal feathers, a plurality of juxtaposed woolen fabric disks, wooden end heads engaging the opposite terminal. disks of said plurality of disks, metal washers applied against the outer faces of the heads, rods extending longitudinally through the disks, heads and washers, and adjusting nuts engaging the threaded extremities of the core and bearing against the metal washers.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
