COMBINED yCONT-ninna Ann DISPLAY TRAY.
.Application filed `J'uly .13,
Y packaged vunits in a large container holding possibly live, siX, ten, o r twentyfive pounds of confectionery.Y Undergthese conditions the cover ofeachof the .top layer of packages has been removed and the packages set up in display position; ,011e of the difficulties. encountered in this method of 'displaying merchandise isthat as-the packages are sold the display level recedes to the interior of the box wherethe prominence of the "display is to some extent modified. .Another obj-ection is that the dispenser is robliged to remove one of .the displayfboxesin'order to get atthe remainderof the stock and then return the VVdisplay package .to position.
The present invention has `for its object the provisionofA .very inexpen'sivefand simple means forsupportinga'.number of packages in display tpositionin a containeror storage pocket Afrom .which similar packages 4'may be quickly and conveniently Aremoved for sale. Uthenobjects will be-inpart obvious and 1in part `pointed-out particularly hereinafter.
The Vinvention accordingly consists in the various ,features of construction,- combination of'relemen'ts' and arrangements of parts, which Willfbe exemplified by the vconstruction hereinafter set. ,forth :and the lscope of the application of .which will be indicated bythe appended claims.
Referring now to the/drawing wherein is shownone of various possible embodiments ofthe invention: j 1
Fig. .l is a lplan view of .my .combined storage vand display device.
F ig. 2 is a View in vertical central section of the' display device shownin F ig. 1, illustrated with the packages in positions of storage and display as in actual use.`
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, a container body is shown as consisting of the base 10,-upstanding side walls 11 and 12, front wall 13 and a connecting member, or strut, 14, which joins the two upstanding side walls at the rearof the oon- 1922. seriai No. 574,767. l
play device has kbeen devised particnlarly1v withv the idea of providing acombined display and storage capacity which :shall be equal to the capacity of the original carton, or box, in whichthe-so-called bulk confectionery is'shipped. For example, in connection With the present yillustrative embodiment, it will be noted that there are twelve packages. Each one of these packages .is put` up .according to definite weight, size .and shape. lThe `Weightfof each package issoine fixed aliquot factor of the aggregate `weight ofall the packages.. A.As forexample, ifthe aggregate weight is siX pounds,.each `package lhasa weight-of onehal'f pound.r Thefsizelof the packages is such that they may `be ..rranged in `the voriginal shipping .carton yin three stacks, lfour packages Yto a stackjpacked snugly to completely'.Y k.fill the shipping fcon# tainer. rlhen according to the present enibodiment of the invention, if `ythreeof the` packages are larranged in the' `display portion ofthe container, the remainderof the' of the box toward the rear. e To feach sidey wvall l fix anangle member 13a extending in parallelism .with the top edge ofthe lwall e and in `'Opposed .relation to each other. One
facevof eachangle member serves asfafineans foi securing the same to its yside wall and the other face of each Vangle member :projects A,
inwardly constituting a shelf `upon which the individual packages may `be supportedr in inclined fashion. i Periodically lportionsof the angle members are turned into provide opposed stops 14a serving as points 'of registration for the front wall ofthe packages.
This invention Ahas particular application. in carrying out a new idea of merchandising socalled bulk confectionery, which idea, ras herei-nbefore briefly. explained, involves fthe packaging of `confectionery in :inexpensive fractional Weight units, each one of which is an aliquot factor of the total weight of all the packages. Inasmuch as the size and weight of the different pieces of confectionery vary over a substantial range, it is necessary at times to increase the height of the package and sometimes the width. The length, however, is maintained substantially ico uniform. For this reason the angle members are arranged suitably below the iop edges of the upstanding side walls and the stops leipermit variation in the widthwise dimension of the packages without destroying the appearance of uniformity in arrangement. Each package is constructed with a cover l5 which, Jfor display purposes, is removed and telescoped with the base of the box 1G. Then the packages have been arranged in display position, a glass plate l is laid in over the boxes and is held against displacement by the extending portions of the side and frontV falls. Tvii/There it is necessary, on account of the size or weiO'ht of the confectionery, to arrange the same in a deeper box, the present display apparatus readily adjusts itselr" to suoli variation in dimension. lt will also be seen 'from inspection or Fig. 2 that the boX may be made with a wide range oivariation widthwise without destroying the uniform appearance of the displayed merchandise. lilith the packages arranged in the display chamber all of the remaining packages which were shipped in the original carton may be located in the storage chamber bclow, as shown clearly in 2, and these are accessible 'for delivery by reason of the tact that the container is open at the rear end. The iront wall is constructed with upper and lower clips 2O constituting means tor holding a card of printed matter and the cross strnt la is provided with clips 2l providing for the removable mounting of a display card.
Having described the invention, what l ciaim is:
l. ln a storage and display device, a container body having front, bottom and side walls with open top and back, an angle inember attached to the inner side of each side wall near the top edge or" the said side wall, and inwardly turned stops on the said angle members.
2. In a storage and display device, a container body having front, bottom and side walls with open top and back, an angle member attached to the inner side ot each side wall near the top edge oi' the said side wall and inclined upwardly from the front of the body toward the rear, and inwardly turned stops on the said angle members.
3. ln a storage and display device, a container body having front, bottom and sideV walls with open top and back, an angle member attached to the inner side of each side wall near the top edge of the said side wall and inwardly turned and opposed stops on the said angle members.
Ll. In a storage and display device, a conainer body having front, bottom and side walls with open top and back, an angle meinber attached to the inner side of each side wall near the top edge of the said side wall, and inclined upwardly from the iront of the body toward the rear, and inwardly turned and opposed stops on the said angle members.
5. In a storage and display device, a conrainer body having front, bottom and side walls with open top and baclr, an angle member attached by its upper leg to the inner side oiu each side wall near the top edge of the said side wall and inclined upwardly from the iront of the body toward the rear, the lower leg of the said angle member extending inwardly at right angles to the side wall, and angular stops extending inwardly from the upper legs ot each of the said angle members and above the lower leg thereof.
6. In a storage and display device, a container body having front, bottom and side walls with open top and back, an angle member attached by its upper leg to the inner side of each side wall near the top edge orn the said side wall and inclined upwardly from the front of the body toward the rear, the lower leg of the said angle member eX- tending inwardly at right angles to the side wall, and angular stops arranged in opposed pairs and extending inwardly from the upper legs ot each of thi` said angle members and above the lower leg thereof.
7. In a storage and display device, a container body having front, bottom and side walls with `open top and back, an angle member attached by its upper leg to the inner side of each side wall near the top edge of the said side wall and inclined upwardly from the front of the body toward the rear, the lower leg of the said angle member eX- tending inwardly at right angles to the side wall, angular stops arranged in opposed pairs and extending inwardly from the upper legs of each of the said angle members and above the lower leg thereof, and a strut connecting the upper portions of the rear oi" the side walls, the upper portions of the iront wall, side walls and the strut cooperating with the said lower legs of the angle members in forming an enclosure for holdin@ a series of packages therein.
