above the level of' other merchandise on the counter. It has been found in practise that the sale of merchandise can be appreciably increased by displaying the goods in step'xtures. In this manner the articles so displayed are more readily noticed by the customers, and articles that do not sell readily can be more quickly disposed of when displayed in such axture.
The step fixtures in' present use` are either permanently constructed of wood or are built up by superposing inverted boxes. Neither of these methods of constructing step-fixtures is entirely satisfactory as the permanent ones cannot be readily changed in size to meet future requirements and the built up type is not rigid and requires considerable skill in the formation thereof.
An object of my invention is to provide a step K fixture that may be readily taken apart or assembled, the disassembled partsthereof making a compact package for shipment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a step fixture that may be readily disassembled yet one that is as rigid and substantial as a permanent fixture when assembled for use.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a step fixture upon which compartments or bins of different sizes may be readily formed.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a step xture that can be varied in width.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a clip for supporting relatively high glass partitions on a display fixture.

Referring specifically to the drawings, Aa step fixture I El, comprising a preferred embodiment of my invention, is shown in Figs. l and 2. this fixture including tray supporting members II,

The trav supports Il, one of which is shownk in detail in Fig. 4, are identical excepting thatA one is right hand and the other left hand. Each of the Ysupports II includes an outside and inside 30 sheet of metal I5 and It respectively having flanges l? and IS at their lower edges, the anges II and IS being spot welded or otherwise secured together. Formed integral with the outside sheet I5 are tabs I9, 26. ZI and 22, the latter being 3:5`
formed soas to retain the sheets I 5 and I6 in proper spaced relationship, As shown in Fig. `4 the upper edges of the sheets I5 and IG are cut to provide progressively higher steps 24. Z 5 and 26.
The back wall. i2 is formed of a single sheet 40 of metal to provide a bottom ange 30 and side iianges 3l, the latter being cut at their upper ends to provide notches 32. As seen in Figs. 2 and 4, the upper edge of the wall I2 is return bent and formed to provide a channel 33.
The trays I3. one of which is shown in Fig. 4, are each formed of a single sheet of metal to provide a top 35, end flanges 36. a rear flange 31 and a front flange 38. the latter being returnf bent at its lower edge to provide a channel 39. The entire top 35 of each of the trays I3 is formed to provide a regular pattern of square apertures 4B as shown in Fig. '7.
The lowermost or front tray I3a is identical to the trays I3 excepting that the front Wall 38a 55 fil thereof is of less height than the walls 38 of the trays I3 and is inwardly bent at its lower edge to provide a flange 42.
The compartment forming apparatus I4 includes high corner clips 44, low corner clips 45'.
and right and left hand one-way clips 46 and 41 respectively. Each of the aforementioned clips has suitable lugs for interlocking engagement with the perforated topsr35 of the trays I3 and I3a substantially as set forth in the above referred to patent and copending application. Received and supported by the various clips are high and low glass partitions 48 and 49 respectively as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to Figs. 8, 9 and 10, I have shown therein the details of one of the high corner clips 44. This clip, which is particularly adapted for use on the high glass partitions 48, includes a base 50 having lugs 5I formed thereon for engagement with the apertures 4!) as seen in Fig. 7. Formed integral withand extending upward from the base 50 isA an outside angle 52, and welded or otherwise secured on the base 50 is an inside angle 53, the latter being formed at its upper end to provide arcuate portions 54. Removably mounted on the upper endl of the clip 45 is a cap 60, the latter being formed of one piece of metal to provide vertical wallsy SI and yieldable ngers 62, the latter being formed to engage the arcuate portions 54 of the inside angle 53 as shown in Fig. 8.
Operation The respective parts of the step'fixture I0 are assembled ln the following manner; The back wall I2 is secured to the rear ends of the tray supporting members IIr by inserting the upper ends of the flanges 3I in between the sheets I5 and I6 so that the rearmost edges of the tabs 22 are receivedby the notches 32. The wall I2 I then being swung into the position in which it is vby the channel 33 of the back wall I2.
shownl in 2 withthe flanges 3| thereof fully receivedbetween thesheets I5 and I6 of the members II. l I l The uppermost tray I3 is then mounted on the members I I as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the end flanges 36 of the tray beingreceived between the sheets I5 and I6, it being noted that the rear y flange 31 of the tray is received and supported center tray I3 is mounted in the same manner, with the rear flange 31 thereof being supported by the channel 39 of th'evfront flange -38 of the uppermost tray I3. The front tray I3a is positioned in the same manner and the compartment forming apparatus I4 positioned on theY trays I3 and I3a as shown in Fig. l. f
Each of the clips 44, 45, 45 and 41 is mounted by .inserting the lugs thereof into the desired apertures while the clip. is held in a substantially horizontal position, the clip being then raised to vertical position as shown and described in the above referred to patent and copending application. The glass 48 and 49 is inserted into pairs of the clips thus retaining the latter in interlocking engagement with the trays. After the high glass 48 is inserted into the corner clips 44 the caps SII' are snapped into position and retained thereon by engagement of the ngers'62 with the arcuate portions 54 .of the inside angle 53. The caps 60 serve to retain the angles 52 The may be used throughout the unit or in any desirf able combination to suit the requirements of the` merchandise to be displayed thereon.
Referring now to Fig. 6, I have shown thereinY the manner in which a fixture 65 of greater width than the fixture I may be built with the apparatus of my invention. Sufiicient space is provided between the sheets I and I6 ofthe supports II to receive the flanges 36, of two trays I3 or I3a placed end to end asshown, it being obvious that any desired number of the trays may be placed end to end as shown in Fig. 6.
Although I have shown and described but one preferred form of my invention it is to be understood that many modifications and changes might be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a display fixture, the combination of: a.
pair `of supporting members cut on their upper` edges to form steps of progressively higher levels,A
each of said members comprising a pair of spaced sheets of metal, one of saidy sheets having tab portions for engaging andjretaining the adjacent Ysheet in said spaced relation; and a tray extending between'said supporting members at each-,of`
said steps, each of said trays having downward bent flanges at opposite ends thereof, said flanges being received and supported between the spaced sheets of said supporting members.
2. In a display fixture, the combinationV of a pair of supporting members, each of said members comprising a pair of closely spaced vsheets of metal cut at their upper edges to form a series of steps; a tray extending between said sup-` porting members at each of said steps, each ofsaid trays comprising a ilat sheet of metal having downturned flanges on the front, rear and end portions thereof, the flanges at the ends of said trays being receivedand supported between' the spaced sheets of said supporting members at said steps, the flanges on the rear edges Vof I all but the uppermost of said trays being received and supported by upturned portions on the lower edges of the ilange on the front edges of said trays.
3. In a display fixture, the combination of: a pair of supportingmembers cut on their upper edges to form steps of progressively higher levels,
spaced relation; a tray extending between said supporting members at each of said levels, each of said trays comprising a flat sheet having downturned flanges on the front, rear and lend portions thereof, the flanges at the ends of said trays being received between spaced sheets of said supporting members at said steps, Vthe flanges on the rear edges of all but the uppermost of saidtrays being received and supported by upturned portions on the lower edges of the flanges on the front edgesl of said trays.
