IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,234, dated January 26, 1875; application filed December 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES B. WEsTwIoK, of Galena, in the county of J o Daviess, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pipe- Tongs and Wrench; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined wrench and pipe-tongs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a lon-' gitudinal section, of my invention.

A represents the handle, made of any suitable dimensions, the front or outer end of which is enlarged and slotted, forming two parallel bars, B. Between the outer ends of the bars B B is pivoted a jaw, 0, both ends of which are cut with V-shaped notches toothed on both sides, said toothed notches being made of unequal size, so that, by reversing the jaw, it can be used for large or small pipes or nuts, as desired. The other jaw, D, is constructed as shown, of a straight fiat bar, having one end curved over and formed on the inner side with a toothed V-shaped notch. The straight part of the jaw D is provided with a longitudinal slot, to, and with ratchetteeth b on the back edge, and it is passed through a box, D, which is pivoted between the bars B by means of a bolt, d, which passes through the slot at in the jaw. In the box D are pivoted a 'pawl, h, and a lever, f, the pawl being grooved or slotted, as shown in Fig. 2, for the insertion of the inner end of the lever, and the pawl is held into the ratchet-teeth b by means of a spring, 5, operating against the lever, as shown in Fig. 2. It will readily be seen that the sliding jaw D can easily be adjusted out and in, as required, it being held in any desired position by the pawl, and it turns with the frame or box D upon the pivot d, to grasp the pipe in connection with either end of the reversible jaw O.

This device is simple in construction, strong and durable, and not liable to get out of order. It can be used as a wrench for any sized nut, and as a pipe-tongs for any sized pipe.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The reversible jaw O, pivoted between the arms B B of the handle A, and operating in combination with the sliding jaw D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination ofthe sliding jaw D, provided with slot at and ratchet-teeth b, the box or frame D, pivot 41, pawl h, lever f, and spring 2', all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the handle A with parallel arms B B. reversible jaw O, the slotted toothed sliding jaw D, box or frame D, and pawl h, operated. by the lever f and spring i, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
