I i a WITNESSES:

JAMES E. DAVIS, OF PALMYRA, OHIO.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPEGIFIQATIQN forming part of Letters latent No. 333,836, dated January 5, 1886. Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 173,928. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piperenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in whic Figure 1 is a perspective view. side view showing section of pipe. top view.
The present invention has relation to pipewrenches; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the lever or handle, which is of any desired length and size. The working end of the lever or handle A is provided with the bent or curved portion B,which is substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, is provided with the slot or groove a. The anterior surface of said bent or curved portion B is corrugated or serrated,so as to more securely hold the pipe desired to be turned.
To the front or forward end of the handle or lever A is pivotally attached the clampingdog 0, which is constructed at each side with a laterally-projecting flange, c, said flanges and pawl or dog being convexed on their in- Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is a ner faces, and constituting a head which is as wide as the width of the curved anterior end, B, of the handle or shank A. It will be seen that as the clamping-dog Ois raised the space or opening for the pipe will be increased, thus providing a wrench that will fit any sized pipewithin the limits of the greatest opening.
In use the pipe desired to be turned is placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the lever or handle A forced downward, thus causing the head a to be tightly drawn down on the pipe. The anterior portion of the bent or curved portion B and the inner surface ofthe head 0 are formed broad, so that the pipe will not be injured in case great force is required to turn the pipe.
For the purpose of holding the sides of the bent or curved portions B in proper elevated position the cross-bar or block D is provided, which also holds the locking-dog 0 within the limits of the slot or groove a.
It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement the force is equally distributed so as not to damage orinjure the pipe in case much force is required to turn the pipe.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a curved pivoted jaw,as such devices are shown in Patents No. 145,263, December 2, 1873 No. 278,264, May 22, 1883, and No. 307,830, and hence do not claim the construction shown in said patents.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a pipe-wrench, the combination, with the head or shank A, having the slotted serrated head B formed integral therewith, and with the block D,located in the slot of said head, of the pivoted pawl or dog 0, having laterallyprojecting side flanges, c c, constituting a head equal in width to the width of the slotted head, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES E. DAVIS.
