Description

June 15 1926. 1,588,738
E. L. JAwbREK HEADLIGHT DIMMER ATTACHMENT Filed Jan. 12, 1926 ATTORNEY Patented June 15, 1926.
UNETE STATES ENGELBERT L. JAVVOREK, OF HOQUIAM, WASHINGTON.
HEADLIGHT DIMMER ATTACHMENT.
Application filed January 12, 1926.
lhis invention relates to automobile headlights and has special reference to a dimmer attachment for such headlights.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an attachment for headlights which may be readily applied thereto and, when so applied, will confine the light rays issuing from such headlights to a limited area thus preventing glaring and the like.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel de tails of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and;
Figure 1 is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof, a portion of the headlight casing being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The invention, as here illustrated, consists of a single stamped or pressed band of metal. This band consists essentially of two parts.
In the first place there is provided a cylin dri ial clan'lping member 10 and next a frusto-conical light restricted member 11. The light restricted member is continuous throughout its periphery and in the process of forming the two members there is provided a peripheral rib 12 surrounding the major base of the member 11. These two members are connected throughout the lower parts, being there formed integrally but the upper part of the member 10 is cut away from the member 11 by a slit 13 and, at its top is separated into two portions 14 and Serial No. 80,774.
15 each provided with an ear 16 upstanding from the respective portion and these cars may be drawn together by a bolt 17.
In using the device the cylindrical portion 10 is slipped over the lamp housing 18 at the front thereof and clamped on this lamp housing by means of the bolt 17. Under these circumstances the conical portion 11 acts as a hood and prevents spreading of the light rays while at the same time the device is firmly attached to the lamp housing 18 the two arms of the portion 10 yielding to permit such clamping since they are free from the conical portion.
There has thus been provided and efficient device of the kind for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, de sired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A headlight dimmer consisting of a sheet metal hood having a rib intermediate its ends, the forward portion of said hood being of complete frusto-conical formation and the rear portion of said body being of cylindrical formation, the forward portion of said hood being separated for substantially one half its diameter from the rear ward portion of said hood by a slit, the separated rear portion of the hood being divided into two parts, upstanding lugs on the adjacent ends of said parts, and a bolt connecting said lugs for moving said ends toward each other and thereby clamp the rearward portion on a housing. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ENGELBERT L. J AVVOREK.
