Description
'Sept. 1, 1931. R. w. THIBODEAU R 1,821,733
GLARE DEFLECTOR Filed Oct. 16, 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 1, 1931 Uhlllfi STATES RALPH W. THIBODEAU, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS GLARE DEFLECTOR Application filed October 16, 1929. Serial No. 400,052.
This invention relates to a glare deflector for headlamps of automobiles and the like, the general object of the inventionbeing to provide a member adapted to be placed in the lower part of the reflector of the lamp and having upstanding reflector members thereon which deflect the rays of light which ordinarily strike the bottom of the reflector to the top of the reflector so that such rays are prevented from passing upwardly and forwardly and thus blinding the drivers of approaching vehicles and pedestrians.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointedout in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sectional view through a lamp provided with my device.
Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the de vice without the ribs or flanges.
Figure 4 is a view of one of the flanges.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the device which tapers from its front end to its rear end and is of arc shape in cross section, so that when placed inthe reflector 2 of a lamp A, the body will cover the lower portion of the reflector. The body formed withthe depending projections 3 which are adapted to be passed through holes formed in the lower part of the reflector and then bent so as to attach thedevice to the said lower part of the reflector, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The rear end of the body may be formed with a substantially semi-circular part 4 to fit around a part of the lamp socket and the bulb and the body is also provided with a plurality of slots 5 arranged in transverse rows to receive the tongues 6 of the strips 7 which are also ofarcshape, as shown in the drawings. 7
These strips are so arranged that they will reflect the rays of light upwardly, which rdinarily strike the bottom of the reflector so that these rays will be reflected downwardly by the upper part of the reflector, as Lnown in Figure 1. Thus the device prevents any of the rays of light being directed upwardly and forwardly so that with this device, glare and blinding of the drivers of approaching vehicles is prevented.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the constructian and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is 2-- A glare deflector comprising a body tapering gradually from one end to the opposite end thereof and transversely and longitudinally curved to conform to the contour of the lower portion of a reflector, projections formed on the edges of the body and extending angularly thereof to engage the reflector for supporting the body in a slight space relative thereto, an arcuate shaped member formed, on the smallest end of thebody to engage under the illuminating means of'the reflector, said body having relatively spaced rows of slots arranged transversely of said body, arcuately curved reflecting elements arranged transversely of the body and in' alignment with the rows of slots, and tongues on the reflecting elements and extending through the slots and bent against one face of said body and spaced from the reflector by the projections.
llntestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RALPH W. THIBODEAU.
