|. M. REED LIGHT DEFLECTOR Filed Feb, 1925 .Zflffeed,
wn'nsss: J ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED STATES ISAAC M. REED, OF BASTROP, LOUISIANA.
LIGHT DEFLECTOR.
Application filed February 25, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac M. Rnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bastrop, in the parish of l\'lorehouse and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Light Deflectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a deflect-or for the headlamps of. motor vehicles and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for deflecting the rays of light downwardly upon the road so as to prevent blinding of pedestrians and drivers of other vehicles while giving full illumination of the road.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for making the device adjustable so that it can be arranged to suit various conditions.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and s ecifically pointed out in the appended c aims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference w ll be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the head lamp having my invention attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the lamp with the parts of the invention in section.
As shown in these views, the device consists of a split ring 1 of angle shape in cross section so that it can be placed on the front enlargement a. of a headlight A. The ring is held in place by the bolt 2 which passes through the perforated ears 3 formed at the ends of the ring; A half ring t is placed over the upper portion of the ring 1 and is pivoted thereto by the pins 5 carried by the ring 1 and engaging holes formed adjacent the ends of the half ring fl. A shield or deflector plate 6 is carried by said half ring and extends downwardly and forwardly at the front of the lamp so as to prevent rays of 0 light passing upwardly from the lamp and thus blinding drivers of other vehicles and Serial No. 11,567.
pedestrians facing the vehicle to which the invention is attached. The plate 6 is of Slightly" curved formation and has straight side edges and a rounded lower edge with a curved flange 7 formed at its top which is fastened to the half ring 4. By pivotally connecting the half ring at with the ring 1 the plate or shield can be adjusted in front of the lamp by rocking the member 4 on its pivot, the parts being held in adjusted position through friction or they may be fastened together by a suitable clamp, screw or the like. By making the member 1 split it can be placed on head lamps of different sizes.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple attachment for a head lamp for preventing the rays of light therefrom from blinding drivers of other vehicles while giv- I ing full illumination of the road, the parts being adjustable so that they can be placed on different sizes of lamps and the shield being adjustable so that it can be arranged in the most suitable position to do the work for which it is intended.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is A deflector shield for a head lamp comprising a split ring adapted to encircle the front part of the lamp, means for holding the ring in position, a half ring pivoted to the first ring at diametrically opposite points and extending over the upper portion thereof and a deflector plate connected with the upper portion of the half ring and extending downwardly and forwardly in front of the lamp said plate being of curved shape and of considerably less width than the length of the half ring so that light rays can pass upwardly beyond each side edge of the plate.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ISAAC M. REED.
