HEADLIGHT DIMIVIER.
' Application filed .Tune 10,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MARCOTTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Headlight Dimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to the headlights on automobiles or other vehicles and has for its object the provision of an attachment which will operate to remove the glare by cutting off the rays of light which are ordinarily projected upwardly into the eyes of the pedestrian or driver of an approaching automobile, the device further operating to concentrate the rays of light upon the ground at the proper distance in front of the automobile to facilitate safe driving.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that the light will also be permitted to diffuse over the area along the sides of a road instead of being concentrated merely in spots.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which may be adjustably mounted upon the head-light whereby the inclination may be varied for adjusting the distance at which the rays of light will strike the ground.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device in applied position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device detached.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a head light of ordinary construction and which may be of any size commonly used on motor vehicles. In carrying out my invention ll provide an anti-glare or dimming device which of 1921. Serial No. 476,515.
course must be made in various-sizes for use in connection with lamps of different sizes.
My dimming device is formed as a shell 10 constructed preferably of sheet metal and having one end cylindrical as indicated at 1 1 for association with the headlights. Formed upon this cylindrical portion of the shell is a forwardly extending hood portion 12 which has its lower edge at one side inclined as shown at 13 and which has one side portion cut away as indicated at 14, for a purpose to be described. Secured within the shell. 10 is a series of plates 15 of progressively increasing length suitably secured to the shell as by means of soldering or by any other desired means. These plates 15 are preferably spaced substantially equal distances apart and may be of any desired number. Likewise the plates are parallel with the axis of the cylindrical shell as shown. Incidentally it may be advisable that the inner surface of the shell be painted black and that either or both surfaces of the plates may be coated with a black material.
It is of course conceivable that the dimming device may be secured upon the head lamp in any one of a variety of ways though in actual practice I have found that an advisable arrangement is that the cylindrical portion 11 of the shell is pivoted at its top edge upon the front of a lamp as indicated at 16. At opposite sides the cylindrical portion is preferably provided with arcuate slots 17 which receive threaded studs 18 projecting from the sides of the lamp and carrying thumb nuts 19. By this construction it will be seen that the dimming device may be inclined downwardly at a greater or less extent as preferred. It Wlll be observed that the top of the device extends rearwardly to a greater extent than the lower portion so that this pitch may be determined. 1
lln the use of the device it will be seen that when the dimmer is inclined slightly downwardly the rays of light issuing from a lamp or light A will naturally be deflected downwardly onto the roadway so as to eliminate glare. At the same time the'cut away portion at the outer side of the dimmer will permit a certain amount of the light to pass laterally on the road way for illuminating the area at the sides of the road.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent '-that I have thus provided a simply con I structed, easily applied and adjusted dim- I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit joined claim.
Having thus described the invention I claim:
A headlight dimming device comprising a shell adjustably mounted upon a head lamp and provided internally with plates, 20
the side of the shell toward the side of the vehicle being partially cut away, whereby to permit light tobe thrown laterally onto the sides of the roadway. Y
of the invention or the scope of the sub- In testimony whereof l afiix my signature. 25
