Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Asi-1, J r, a citizen of the Unit-ed State?, residing at Alton, in the; county of Madison and State of' Illinois, have invented new and. useful` Improvements in Headlight Lamps, of which the following is aA specification. y
In theheadlamps for automobiles and the like, the rays of light are directed from the lamp bulb to all parts of the conical reflector. The result is that these light rays are frequently direc-ted into the eyes of the driver of an approaching automobile so that he is liable to lese control ofrhis` machine and both machines are liable to accident. The object of' this invention is the provision of an extremely suit-able and cheaply constructed means for directing raysof' light from a bulb in a headlamp upwardly toward. the top of the reflector so that .such rays are from thence deflected downwardly, and whereby the road ahead of the machine will be an'iply illuminated and the rays of light will be prevented from reflecting into the eyes of' the drivers of approaching machines.
The drawings which accompany and form part of this application illustrate a satisfactory embodiment v,of my improvement, and wherein v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shield in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view but-showing one of the back portions of the shield disassociated from the other.

My improved deflector shield is formed from a single strip of suitable lustrous metal. The strip or sheet is of a substantially rectangular shape, and is centrally bent upon itselfto provide the sides 1 and@ of the reflector. The outer edges of the sides 1 and 2 are beaded, as at A. In a line withthe juncture of the sides 1 and 2 the metal strip is slitted from one of its ends and the projecting portions of the said strip are then bent inwardly and rightangularly with respect to the sides 1 and 2. These portions are arranged in lapping relation and provide the back of the shield. yThe inner section 4 of the back lhas its outer edge formed with anextension 5. These rays will be then deflected downwardly, 'and while the lamps illuminate thev roadway' directly ahead of' tlie machine the rays therefrom will not reach the eyes of' the `drivers `oi" approaching machines, so thattaccidents which frequently' occur from this cause will be effectively yobviated. p y
