Description
ELIAL'M. STAPLES, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
GLARE-DIMMER.
Application led December 5, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAL M. STAPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glare-Dimmers; and I do h ereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of tlieinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in glare dimming devices for lights and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully 'described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved dimming device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figpl. g
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig.` 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates two sheets of wire netting of any'mesh desired, and B is a dimming member which may be of any suitable material, such as fabric of any kind, adapted to mellow the light and prevent the glare of the same. of fabric is of circular outline and is adapted to conform to the outline of lamps of diiierent sizes and held thereinv in the -same manner as the usual glass upon lights.
The sheet of dimming material covers, preferably, a little more than half the area of the screen, the central portion, designated by letter C, extending below the transverse center for the purpose of covering the bulb which is to be centrally mounted in the reflector.4 Said sheet of dimming material is placed between the two sheets ,of wire netting or screens and a binding D is stitched about and to the two sheets ,of screens and also through the marginal edge of the sheet -of dimmingmaterial and, in order to iurther hold the latter securely in place, the two screens and the sheet of dimming maspecmcation of Letters Patent.
Said sheet Patented J an. 1, 1918.
Serial No. 135,228.
terial may be held frictionally together by corrugations E.
lWhile I have shown the dimming material mounted between two v'sheets of screening and stitched thereto, it will be understood of a dimmer which will have a dimming material and which may replace the usual glass mounted in the lamp for vehicles or other purposes.
By the provision of a dimming device for lamps especially designed for automobiles, etc., it will be noted that, inthe event of anything striking the dimmer, it will yieldv without breaking and the light from the lamp will be diffused and the glare from the usual lights avoided.
What I claim to be new is 1. A dimmer for lamps adapted to replace the glass of the front of the lamp, comprising screens, a sheet of dimming material intermediate the same, said screens being provided with corrugations for holding the parts together.
2. A dimmer for lamps adapted to replace the glass of the front of the lamp, comprising screens, a sheet of dimming material intermediate the same, said screens being provided with corrugations for holdplace the glass of the front of the la p,'
comprising screens, a sheet of dimming terial intermediate the same, said screens being provided with corrugations for holding the parts together, the marginal edges of the screens and intermediate sheet of dimming material being stitched together.
4. A dimmer for lamps comprising two semi-circular outlined sheets of wire mesh esl work screens with registering semi-circular outlined recesses formed therein, a sheet 0f dimming material intermediate the wire mesh work screens, said screens and intermediate sheet of dimming material being provided with a series of concentrlc corruy gations.
5. A dimmer for lamps comprising two semi-circular outlined sheets of wire mesh work screens with registering semi-circular outlined recesses formed therein, a sheet of dimming material intermediate the Wire binding about the marginal edges of said mesh Work screens, said screens and interscreens and thepsheet of screening material mediate sheet of dimming material being and stitched thereto', said screens and sheet provided With a series of concentric corruof dimming'material being further held to- 15 5 gations, and a binding` fastened about the gether by corrugating the same.
